Critics Consensus

Ambitious yet undercooked, Body Cam can't quite connect the dots between its genre thrills and socially aware themes.

Watching Vitthal aim high and not quite make it is still preferable to watching so many other horror film-makers remain satisfied with lazy regurgitation. Go to Full Review

Despite the ripeness and flammability of its material, the movie feels oddly distant, the screenplay marred by weak scares, graceless plotting and dashed-off characters. Go to Full Review

There is a clear battle between the film's desire for either realism or fantasy; Body Cam uses horror as a cure-all. Go to Full Review

See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Nov 23 Body Cam was a film I went into with at least some level of expectation, mainly because Mary J. Blige usually chooses decent roles and rarely attaches her name to something that feels below a certain standard. Unfortunately, this movie didn’t live up to what I hoped for. It started with the promise of being either entertaining or respectful in its approach, but instead it drifted into something that felt messy, unfocused, and far less gripping than it should have been. For a brief period in the film, when Mary J. Blige is fully stepping into the role of a cop, there is a spark. You can feel the tension, the urgency, and the emotional weight she’s trying to carry. Those early moments give you hope that the film is about to deliver something meaningful or chilling. But once the story begins to expand and the supernatural elements kick in, it loses its footing entirely. The energy drops, the pacing gets inconsistent, and the film becomes harder to stay invested in. The direction feels scattered, almost like the filmmaker wasn’t entirely sure what kind of movie they wanted to make. At times, it leans into horror. Other times, it tries to be a police thriller. Then suddenly, it attempts emotional drama. None of these pieces blend smoothly, and as a result, the film feels like it’s constantly shifting without ever finding its identity. That lack of confidence in tone becomes one of the biggest problems. The screenplay doesn’t help either. The writing is unfocused and uneven, jumping between ideas that never get fully developed. It’s as if the script wanted to chase multiple themes—corruption, trauma, justice, the supernatural—but didn’t commit to any of them. Because of that, the plot becomes hard to follow in places, not in a mysterious way, but in a "this needed another rewrite" kind of way. Mary J. Blige still manages to give the story some grounding. She plays her role with sincerity and delivers emotional strength whenever the script gives her space to breathe. But even strong performances can’t save a film that can’t decide what it wants to be. She does what she can, but she’s trapped in a story that doesn’t rise to meet her efforts, and that’s the real disappointment here. Overall, Body Cam isn’t the worst film ever made, but it’s far from a memorable one. It has pieces that could have worked with better direction and a tighter script, but instead it lands in the middle of the road—watchable, but not satisfying. I would say check it out if you’re curious or a fan of Mary J. Blige, but just remember: this isn’t a movie you’re going to jump up and down for. It’s serviceable, but not something you’ll be eager to revisit. See more Mohd Amir B Jun 4 Not your typical horror.
