Terry Mesnard Gayly Dreadful it's a madcap exercise in hilarity and gross outs that had me laughing in glee and surprise. Dec 18, 2022 Full Review Adrian Martin Film Critic: Adrian Martin Cult Australian horror film (actually from 1993) superbly directed by polymath artist Philip Brophy. Don't miss it! A fave of Tarantino. Jun 26, 2020 Full Review C.H. Newell Father Son Holy Gore Underneath the gooey gore is a scathing satire about the fitness craze, specifically of the '80s and '90s, which hasn't gotten much better today, if at all. Walter W “Body Melt” is Australia’s bronze medal in the Body Horror Olympics. It’s “Ozploitation” at its grossest. It marked Phillip Brophys feature length film directorial debut in 1993 and only entry in that category. He literally dropped the microphone and walked away. I know actor Sam Neill did a similar thing ("The Brush Off" 2004), because it’s bloody hard work being a Director. “Body Melt” is a deeply disturbing, dark comedy that shows you what can possibly go wrong when big pharmaceuticals go rogue. Fans of Ian Smith (“Neighbours”) will be blown away by his role as “Dr. Carrera” the inventor of an experimental body drug called “V”. Sorry “The Boys” creators didn’t invent this idea you just stole it from Phil who also wrote the script. I hope he sues the creator behind “Supernatural”. Erik Kripke ("Gen V") I'm looking at you mate. One of my favourite Aussie actors the late Gerard Kennedy ("Homicide") stars as “Detective Sam Phillips” investigating the link between mysterious, gory, painful deaths in suburban, Pebbles Court, Homesville and a giant corporation, Vimuville. A fictitious state of the art health and lifestyle centre manufacturing weird drugs. The first phase of taking “V” is hallucinogenic... the second phase is glandular... and the third phase is “Body Melt” and just like comedy it’s not pretty. Also watch out for: William McInnes, Andrew Daddo, the late Vincent Gill (“Number 96”/“Mad Max”) plus Brett Climo and Lisa McCune as husband and pregnant wife. Later they played brother and sister in “Blue Heelers”. It’s a cornucopia of central casting down under. Somehow this low budget ($1.6 million) sci-fi horror flick could afford Deep Purple’s “Highway Star” in its soundtrack. I can’t lie to you, “Body Melt” is a hard watch, but shows Phil should direct more horror movies rather than just compose songs. Some directors like John Carpenter manage to balance both the music department, writing and directing careers successfully. Then again I don’t know if film goers are ready to see any more salt, saliva, sperm or sweat on the big screen after sitting through “Body Melt” for 1 hour and 21 minutes. Warning: Sex scenes, profanity, violence, gore and drugs. This movie is not for those with queasy stomachs…even I took a hiatus only to come back and watch it to its logical conclusion weeks later. Legendary US director Quentin Tarantino loves this movie, so it’s not all bad. Once watched, you can't unwatch it! #Brollie Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review Paul M This is a horror gem that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Dead Alive, Evil Dead and The Re-Animator... and that's not some fan boy hyperbole. It will give any body horror movie a run for its money and without breaking a sweat. You're doing yourself a major disservice by not checking this one out, especially if you love campy and gory B Horror movies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review Adam U Anybody who doesn't give this Australian splatter masterpiece 5 stars is on the wrong kind of drugs! This is a great film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Chris B It's actually exhausting watching this because it's not at all funny, not in the slightest bit scary or disturbing, and it makes no sense. The 'special effects' are pathetic and are especially dated, even for a film made 30 years ago. Do not get me started on the soundtrack, it's completely imbecilic.
