Susan Walker Toronto Star It is about as clever as one can be on a low budget with actors known only from bit parts and TV. Audience Member Like many others, I was quite sceptical about Bollywood movies but this one really convinced me that not all Bollywood movies are boring. In fact, they could be quite funny (in a clever way) to watch. The movie is about a woman who would like to follow her dreams and become a superstar. But along the way becoming a superstar, she will face challenges (of which are very funny to watch). The cast, most of whom seem to be non-professional first timers, did a pretty good job under the circumstances. Koel Purie and Sitara Hewitt as the battling divas from hell stole the show of course, but there were some other pretty good performances from Christian Bako, as the vicious razor wielding henchman and Daniel Della Penna as his soft-hearted gangster nemesis. Others, like Cristian Rossel, as the heroine's gay best friend Prem, not so much - which is a shame because he had one of the best roles. Overall, highly recommended to watch! You won't be disappointed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Silly, campy and generally crazy, Bolly Double is definitely an enjoyable movie. I noticed on imdb that this film was originally titled Lookalike -- and I kind of wish they had kept it that way. I usually try to avoid watching any movie with the word ?bolly? in the title because they all seem to be too unwatchable, but in this case I was glad my girlfriend made me watch the film. You don't need to have any prior knowledge of Hindi cinema to get the movies point. Underneath the over the top comedy and dance numbers, the film is a really a satire on the clichés of formula films -- which could apply equally as much to Hollywood movies since the 80s as it does to contemporary Bollywood. There were a few (very short) song and dance numbers that integrated well into the plot, but in general the film was more like an old Hollywood screwball comedy. I for one was surprised to find out that this was a low budget film. There were car chases, fight sequences, songs and dances etc. First time writer/director Arun Bharali did a good job of making the most of the resources available and delivering a feel-good entertaining film that provided two hours of engaging escapist fun. He also showcased his dialog by being funny, without being over-the-top. My favorite line has to be "He has a job and a Honda Accord." The oft repeated message in the movie that it's "never too late", contributes to the general sense of feel-good sweetness, and although the movie's nothing to write home about from a technical point of view, you can tell its heart's in the right place, and good intentions do count for something after all. I'd recommend this movie to all of my friends or anyone who wants a good laugh. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Good clean Bolly-camp. Thoroughly had fun. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Saw Bolly Double and had a lot of fun. Has all the elements of a Bollywood film, set in Toronto and in English! No subtitles required for this fun romp. Left theatre singing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
