Critics Consensus

Bone Tomahawk's peculiar genre blend won't be for everyone, but its gripping performances and a slow-burning story should satisfy those in search of something different.

Tara Brady Irish Times Ultraviolence aside, there's plenty to admire about this innovative genre-bender. Rated: 4/5 Feb 23, 2016 Full Review Anton Bitel Sight & Sound a funny (strange and haha) western landscape where it is all too easy to get pillaged, consumed or lost. Feb 19, 2016 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) It is mostly just an excuse for the debut director, S Craig Zahler, to whip the rug out from under you, Tarantino-style. Rated: 4/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Jordan Brooks Vague Visages Boasting some brutally insane practical effects, horrifying villains and a really cute old man, Bone Tomahawk is an unlikely paragon of genre-blending-gone-right. Chris F Bone Tomahawk is a great example of a modern western. The journey and the characters are superb. In a perfect world, we would get a Brooder spin-off movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Stephen H One of the craziest movies I've ever seen. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Good Movies Enjoyer B This movie was awesome. Sure it had a long buildup, but it was definitely worth it. It never felt slow or boring, just excellently written the whole way through. And by the last third of the movie, it had some of the most disturbing and realistic depictions of violence and gore I've ever seen in a movie. The blend of the cowboy genre and horror was an awesome fresh take on both genres. I really liked this movie, and would definitely recommend it! :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Ethan G This is, as simply as can be put, a bad movie. The main characters aside the sheriff's are very annoying. Emotional music with no emotion to the scene. Bad audio not matching the events... This was supposed to be a western and it starts off realistic enough but I've no interest in watching an hour and a half of a man in crutches walking across the desert and being a liability. Not to mention the scenes of violence played off to be serious while being simply hilarious.. Unfortunately, there's only action scenes in about 1/8th of the entire film. Not even fun to watch for a bad movie night, just bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Gregory T The first 1 hr 30 mins is punishingly slow, and the last 45 mins is relatively lackluster and anticlimactic. For what was described as the fusion of western and horror, "Bone Tomahawk" managed to be one of the most boring entries in both genres. What this film calls "horror" boils down to a few brief scenes of gore for gore's sake, which is doubly a disappointment considering that none of the protagonists who are killed are actually killed on screen. The only remotely interesting character that has any sort of arc that you're rooting for is Patrick Wilson's, with all of the others just kind of being "there" and filling space. None of the protagonists have any real chemistry with each other, and all of the antagonists are as one dimensional as possible. I really can't figure out which movie all of the positive reviewers watched, because it surely couldn't have been this one. Everything this movie tried to do, "The Searchers" did better 60 years ago. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Beverly B It was Great! Ingenious way to mix a horror movie with a western sidekick. I definitely need sequel or a movie. I truly enjoyed the acting, scenery and story line. YES!😎 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
