Critics Consensus

Bone Tomahawk's peculiar genre blend won't be for everyone, but its gripping performances and a slow-burning story should satisfy those in search of something different.

Tara Brady Irish Times Ultraviolence aside, there's plenty to admire about this innovative genre-bender. Rated: 4/5 Feb 23, 2016 Full Review Anton Bitel Sight & Sound a funny (strange and haha) western landscape where it is all too easy to get pillaged, consumed or lost. Feb 19, 2016 Full Review Kevin Maher The Times (UK) It is mostly just an excuse for the debut director, S Craig Zahler, to whip the rug out from under you, Tarantino-style. Rated: 2/5 Feb 18, 2016 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Bone Tomahawk surges head first into violence with absolute courage and graphic disregard. Rated: 3/5 Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh The thrilling performances and engaging dialogue keeps you invested up through the brutal finale, more than making up for its shortcomings in its direction. Rated: 4/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Jordan Brooks Vague Visages Boasting some brutally insane practical effects, horrifying villains and a really cute old man, Bone Tomahawk is an unlikely paragon of genre-blending-gone-right. Logan D When three people are kidnapped by troglodytes, a sherrif (Kurt Russell) leads a small posse to rescue them. It's hard for me to believe this film has a Fresh 91% score on RT. I found it a struggle to finish, especially with its runtime. This film is tedious. And the horror is extremely mild to satisfy man fans. They sadly missed a chance to utilize Zahn McClarnon for contrast. I recommend The Burrowers (2008) instead. Holy cow! That was Matthew Fox? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Annie S. I would have liked a little more gore, but it did have some really good parts where I had to take a breather. Overall I throughly enjoyed it. I want more movies like this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/03/25 Full Review 진 이 A unique western movie. I've never seen a western like this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review Pongo K This was a mixed bag. Some good action, but a lot of boring talk as well. Most of the movie was drama. The movie is completely fictious. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/25 Full Review Paula S Very good acting, and I love Kurt Russell. This is not one of his better movies. It’s very dragged out and a lot of the scenes are very unrealistic. How can a guy with a compound fracture crawl across the desert and save everybody well the people that are in good shape can’t make it. I don’t know I would not watch it again. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/21/25 Full Review Mark H The lack of a soundtrack was a horrible decision. The film is slow and quite honestly pointless. It's is exceedingly violent and grotesque. Good performances can't save poor writing. After you see this films graphic gore you won't be able to forget it. Except that's the only thing you'll remember. Nothing else stands out in this trashy boring film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review Read all reviews
