Critics Consensus

Bone Tomahawk's peculiar genre blend won't be for everyone, but its gripping performances and a slow-burning story should satisfy those in search of something different.

Tara Brady Irish Times Ultraviolence aside, there's plenty to admire about this innovative genre-bender. Rated: 4/5 Feb 23, 2016 Full Review Anton Bitel Sight & Sound a funny (strange and haha) western landscape where it is all too easy to get pillaged, consumed or lost. Feb 19, 2016 Full Review Kevin Maher The Times (UK) It is mostly just an excuse for the debut director, S Craig Zahler, to whip the rug out from under you, Tarantino-style. Rated: 2/5 Feb 18, 2016 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Bone Tomahawk surges head first into violence with absolute courage and graphic disregard. Rated: 3/5 Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh The thrilling performances and engaging dialogue keeps you invested up through the brutal finale, more than making up for its shortcomings in its direction. Rated: 4/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Jordan Brooks Vague Visages Boasting some brutally insane practical effects, horrifying villains and a really cute old man, Bone Tomahawk is an unlikely paragon of genre-blending-gone-right. Michael D Disturbing film with gratuitous violence and gore. Super slow beginning and only interesting if you like watching people subjected to horror, cannibalism, and torture. I don't understand what people get out of watching films like this. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/25 Full Review Ben T The best western horror you’ll ever see! Yes, you read that right, western horror. S. Craig Zahler proves himself a master storyteller, crafting a deceptively simple yet gripping plot that holds your attention from start to finish. The slow-burn pacing is filled with subtle hints of darker things to come, and the buildup is so compelling you can’t look away. By the final act, Zahler shatters expectations with a shocking and brutal turn that is equal parts horrifying, mesmerizing, and unforgettable. It’s a rare film that blends genres so seamlessly, and this one leaves an impact long after the credits roll. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/14/25 Full Review Martin S An awful movie. Just skip to the last 30 minutes. The rest of the movie is pointless. Bad characters, bad dialogue. The filming quality is good. It's just that there is no story. Just some gore at the end. I wish I could get my time back.. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/06/25 Full Review Kyle W This film is a wild ride of unexpected action and horror. Kurt Russel is at his best with an excellent supporting cast and a compelling, shock-inspiring story. Gratuitous gore and scripted dialog at times prevent me from giving 5 stars for this one. But make no mistake, this is an exciting and highly-recommended movie that presents originality, suspense, and sheer grit. I recommend this one. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/26/25 Full Review Kathleen Savage violence in this movie Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/15/25 Full Review Harrison H This is my first review of a movie I’ve ever written but I felt I needed to because of how bamboozled I was. This movie is raved about and has a cult following apparently so I sat down and watched it. Terrible. The dialogue was ridiculous and almost annoying. The unnecessary scenes of traveling and terrible empty conversations. I get it was low budget and shot with good actors. But seriously other than the couple of “gore” scenes this movie has nothing to offer! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
