Critics Consensus

Bone Tomahawk's peculiar genre blend won't be for everyone, but its gripping performances and a slow-burning story should satisfy those in search of something different.

Tara Brady Irish Times Ultraviolence aside, there's plenty to admire about this innovative genre-bender. Rated: 4/5 Feb 23, 2016 Full Review Anton Bitel Sight & Sound a funny (strange and haha) western landscape where it is all too easy to get pillaged, consumed or lost. Feb 19, 2016 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) It is mostly just an excuse for the debut director, S Craig Zahler, to whip the rug out from under you, Tarantino-style. Jon W I stumbled across this movie on a subscription channel, and after reading the description, and the positive reviews on here, I settled down with great anticipation to enjoy. What a disappointment. Terrible acting, cringe worthy dialogue, and a plot that a seven year old could have dreamed up. How can professional critics honestly rain praise on this garbage? Avoid at all costs. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie plays out the worst aspects of a Quinton Tarantino film. Drawn-out excessively with drivel dialogue that leads to a small sequence of bafoonery Scooby-doo style action sequence... The first hour and a half is a slog, the final 20 minutes is 95% of the movie... Acting is emotionless and monotone even in what should be life traumatizing events. There is no scoring to this film for the entire length, making every moment that much more stale and emotionless. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/25 Full Review Nicholas C This was the worst piece of crap I’ve ever seen. I would literally rather spoon out my own eyes than watch that again. I waited hoping the end would redeem the movie and it ended up being the worst movie ending I’ve ever seen. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Aaron D Bone Tomahawk is a fast-and-slow bitter journey with poignant moments spread throughout this movie, with a very touching quote delivered by Kurt Russell. The film can be as dry as its landscapes and as sudden as a storm, both a critique and a praise. While its violence is a tad cartoonish, bordering on humorous, this barebones character driven rescue mission is a fun one-time watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Eileen A The acting is what makes this movie worth the somewhat overly graphic violence towards the end. Everyone, and I mean everyone, puts in their best, and it's a great example of what ensemble acting should look like, with no one out doing the others or scene stealing. You believe these characters live in the Old West in a little town in the middle of nowhere, and that they're determined to find the captives and bring them home. At the same time, they show their fear and their loathing. Just don't be afraid to hide your eyes if it gets too gory for you! I did! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Noah S This movie being labeled as horror on Netflix doesn’t do it justice. It’s a unique blend of Western and horror elements, but at its heart, it’s about the raw and relentless journey of the main character. The brutal and heartbreaking scenes might not be for everyone, but they’re what make this movie stand out. It’s intense, gripping, and paints a vivid picture of the harsh and unforgiving realities of the Wild West. Definitely worth watching if you’re ready for a slower paced but well told story.
