Critics Consensus

Bone Tomahawk's peculiar genre blend won't be for everyone, but its gripping performances and a slow-burning story should satisfy those in search of something different.

Tara Brady Irish Times Ultraviolence aside, there's plenty to admire about this innovative genre-bender. Rated: 4/5 Feb 23, 2016 Full Review Anton Bitel Sight & Sound a funny (strange and haha) western landscape where it is all too easy to get pillaged, consumed or lost. Feb 19, 2016 Full Review Kevin Maher The Times (UK) It is mostly just an excuse for the debut director, S Craig Zahler, to whip the rug out from under you, Tarantino-style. Rated: 2/5 Feb 18, 2016 Full Review Bryce Hanson Horror Movie Talk One scene in particular stands out so much that it’s basically become a meme as “that scene” in Bone Tomahawk. For good reason. It will stick with you, and if you are a man, you will especially feel something. Rated: 8/10 Sep 23, 2025 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Bone Tomahawk surges head first into violence with absolute courage and graphic disregard. Cody F I made an account Just to review this movie and let anyone who may be checking reviews before watching it stop reading and go watch it, you’ll thank me 2 hours and 12 minutes from now. I was going to say it’s my favorite western, then I thought about it and was going to say favorite horror instead, but it’s also a suspense movie, action movie and so much more, but it doesn’t try too hard to be any of these; it just is, and that’s why it’s in a genre all of its own and easily replaced "No Country for Old Men" as my new favorite movie of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/24/25 Full Review Jack F I thought it was a unique experience, that shook up the genre standards. Strangely paced though. It was cool to see Patrick Wilson in something other than the Conjuring or Insidious. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/22/25 Full Review Wayne K S. Craig Zahler’s filmmaking style might not be for everyone, but it’s perfectly suited to a story like Bone Tomahawk, a steady, graphic Western that uses an unhurried style to suck you in before literally clubbing you over the head at the pivotal time. With lots of time spent following our characters over the vast landscape, we become as weary and cautious as they do, and every twig snapping or animal call in the distance alerts us as it does them. The constant absence of a score feeds the sense of isolationism, and the performances from the small cast are both committed and understated. These are world-weary characters, used to violence and bloodshed, and so when we see them scarred or frantic it hits all the harder. The violent moments are spread out and I never felt like they were gratuitous. I’ve seen countless slasher films that are far bloodier than this, and some of the gore is very creative as opposed to just being there to sate the audience’s bloodlust. It’s a movie that acknowledges the harsh realities of life in the west and how death is a constant companion out in the wilderness, to the point where some character’s deaths are treated with no fanfare whatsoever. Zahler has made a great trilogy behind the camera, and I think I’d have to put the ballsy, bleak and bold Bone Tomahawk at the top of the list. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/25 Full Review Xane B. I really enjoyed the flot of this movie and the acting was terrific. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review Stoner J Excellent flick. I don’t even like westerns but as this one is part horror, I had to check it out. Was not disappointed. And it’s not as long and overblown as a lot of other Zahler films. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/08/25 Full Review Aaron S. I really didn’t enjoy this. I thought it was slow paced with inconsistency in the plot.
