Critics Consensus

This sequel to Blair Witch Project is all formula and no creativity, mechanically borrowing elements from the original and other horror movies.

Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader One of the key lessons of The Blair Witch Project that’s completely lost on Book of Shadows is that disorientation can take place only after some orientation is established. Jun 22, 2022 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek It is just another dreadful teen horror flick--albeit one gussied up with self-conscious notions about the thin line between perception and reality. Mar 31, 2008 Full Review Globe and Mail Rated: 2/4 Mar 19, 2002 Full Review Chuck Klosterman Akron Beacon Journal All the characters make these self-evident, monotone comments about all the supernatural insanity that plagues them, and nobody seems nearly as upset as they should be. Rated: 2/4 Oct 28, 2023 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine The film with which we are left is arguably one of the most disappointing horror sequels of all time. Rated: 2/10 Jun 7, 2019 Full Review C.H. Newell Father Son Holy Gore The dialogue is brutal, to the point of cringing in many a scene, then it gets far too expository to take seriously. Whit H Look, how many horror movies of fantastic quality have really good sequels? Or even average sequels? I am not going to lie to you...this is not a great sequel to The Blair Witch Project. I think if it had no ties to TBWP, this movie would not be graded so poorly. Some of the acting (mostly towards the end) is decent. And the story is not bad. In fact, when I talk to people much younger than me like my adult kids, they overwhelmingly like this movie. My two youngest prefer Book of Shadows to TBWP (but in fairness, one thinks the Scooby Doo mashup is the best Blair Witch offering). My point is this: If you are looking for anything to recreate the magic of TBWP, no, this movie is not going to do it. But it's fun and entertaining and deserves a watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review Josh A I liked how this one was a bit of an experiment. They did found footage in the first one, so now we have a dramatization of "real" events. It still holds up the illusion that the events really happened. But that's basically all the good I can say about it. It's a meta-commentary on the response to The Blair Witch Project and the reveal of what actually happened was cool, but that's it. This movie doesn't have the same charm as the original. This feels like it was made to make money, which it was. We barely spend any time in the woods. It's boring. The characters are likeable, sure, but don't have as much character as Heather, Josh n' Mike from the first film. The way I see it, this is the forgotten entry of the series. It's like the Blair Witch equivalent of Spiral (the 1998 sequel to Ring, not the 2021 Saw spinoff) - a mediocre sequel to a great movie. Also this commits the worst sin a movie can do - it is boring. Overall, mediocre movie. I'm sure the 2016 film will be better. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review SkyRo P #MovieReview #BlairWitch #Netflix The 2016 installment of Blair Witch fell short of expectations, failing to revive the franchise effectively. While not the worst entry in the series, it lacked the excitement and originality needed to captivate viewers. The decision to continue the found-footage style with a video camera in a life-threatening situation felt contrived and unrealistic, diminishing the suspense that made the original so impactful. Available on Netflix, this film may disappoint fans of the cult classic Blair Witch Project. It missed the mark in capturing the essence and fear of the Blair Witch, instead contributing to a string of lackluster sequels that diluted the franchise's legacy. In contrast, the 1999 Blair Witch Project succeeded in creating an unsettling atmosphere through its use of found footage, sparking fear and leaving viewers questioning the reality of the events depicted. The original film's actors and actresses played their roles convincingly, adding to the illusion of reality and instilling fear in viewers. However, subsequent installments, particularly the second film, veered into cheesy and unreliable territory, losing the supernatural suspense that made the original so effective. Overall, the mishandling of the Blair Witch franchise post the original film led to a decline in fear factor and quality. Subpar adaptations failed to recapture the chilling essence of the first movie, ultimately diluting the impact of the Blair Witch myth and diminishing the franchise's reputation in the horror genre. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/24 Full Review Ben F I know I'm an odd man out but this is definitely my favorite Blair Witch movie for sure and I love all the other ones as well but this is the best Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Lucas t Why make this sequel to such a good movie that didn't need a sequel, wait, isn't that how all franchises work??? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Andre F Witchy y2k movie. In my opinion it is a satisfactory film. Evaluating it as a stand-alone and not as a franchise, of course. The movie succeeds in delivering a unique take on an atmospheric horror film. Despite its messy narrative, when the film focuses on the dark aspects of the occult world, it really succeeds. It may not be a perfect film by any means but I can respect it for what it was trying to accomplish. An applause for Erica Leerhsen who marked a decade with her appearances in horror films. And a wink at Kim Director who took a risk in becoming the character we all wanted to be. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Read all reviews
