      Critics Consensus

This sequel to Blair Witch Project is all formula and no creativity, mechanically borrowing elements from the original and other horror movies.

Andre F Witchy y2k movie. In my opinion it is a satisfactory film. Evaluating it as a stand-alone and not as a franchise, of course. The movie succeeds in delivering a unique take on an atmospheric horror film. Despite its messy narrative, when the film focuses on the dark aspects of the occult world, it really succeeds. It may not be a perfect film by any means but I can respect it for what it was trying to accomplish. An applause for Erica Leerhsen who marked a decade with her appearances in horror films. And a wink at Kim Director who took a risk in becoming the character we all wanted to be. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review James B I loved this film to death more than I thought. The plot is interesting although their isn't as many scares as the first one but at least it does the first one justice. The plot twist at the end I did not see coming but I loved it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/24 Full Review Dalton i This movie is impossibly bad. I never thought I would watch a film worse than The Sand, but here we are. Every character in this movie is either boring or insufferable every second they're on screen. This movie isn't even a Blair Witch movie, nothing from the first film comes back except the forest, which by the way, is only in the movie for a couple of minutes. Everything else is either uncreative or just absolutely awful. Every plot point feels forced and unnatural, every actor is either boring at best or unbelievably poorly done at worst. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/09/23 Full Review Forged S I love how meta this movie is, pre-dating the concept of "meta" by at least a decade or longer. This movie focuses on a group of fans of the original Blair Witch movie (a fake documentary, but real in this movie) who travel to the very real town of Burkittsville, Maryland to catch a glimpse of the Blair Witch. From there the movie dives into full-on psychological horror, leaving the characters and you the audience member questioning what's real and what's fake. Overall, the movie's cheesy, but fun. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Cyrus K I have never seen the first movie, boy was this a horrible introduction to the series. Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader One of the key lessons of The Blair Witch Project that’s completely lost on Book of Shadows is that disorientation can take place only after some orientation is established. Jun 22, 2022 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek It is just another dreadful teen horror flick--albeit one gussied up with self-conscious notions about the thin line between perception and reality. Mar 31, 2008 Full Review Globe and Mail Rated: 2/4 Mar 19, 2002 Full Review Chuck Klosterman Akron Beacon Journal All the characters make these self-evident, monotone comments about all the supernatural insanity that plagues them, and nobody seems nearly as upset as they should be. Rated: 2/4 Oct 28, 2023 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine The film with which we are left is arguably one of the most disappointing horror sequels of all time. Rated: 2/10 Jun 7, 2019 Full Review C.H. Newell Father Son Holy Gore The dialogue is brutal, to the point of cringing in many a scene, then it gets far too expository to take seriously.
