Noel Murray Los Angeles Times "Boy Genius" remains frustratingly bland and disjointed throughout - like it was assembled from discarded pieces of family-friendly television pilots. Audience Member Funny innovative and kind of sweet there's going to take Miles Brown from "Blackish" from acting into a good movie you have to see it with great acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A charming movie of its type, lifted above bland formula by some lively performances, refreshing diversity, and moments of tenderness, reflection and sheer silliness. Emmett, in trying to clear his brother's name, forges friendships with unlikely characters, and struggles to move beyond the narcissism of his age (12) and talents (he is a child prodigy used to a lot of praise and attention). Issues of race, class, mental illness and atonement for past sins are addressed, but lightly and within the context of the characters' natural interactions. Miles Brown (Emmett) is a seasoned actor despite his age, and carries the role off with energy and aplomb. Rita Wilson, who plays his unlikely eccentric librarian partner-in-crime-solving, creates a wonderfully warm, funny character. Her hilarious lip-syncing scene is worth the price of admission alone. Skylan Brooks, Tracie Thomas, Nora Dunn and Arden Myrin also contribute a great deal to the film's heart and energy. A lovely film for adults to enjoy alone or with their pre-teen kids for a teaching moment. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
