Bill Skarsgård stars as "Boy" who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy orphaned, deaf and voiceless. Driven by his inner voice, one which he co-opted from his favorite childhood video game, Boy trains with a mysterious shaman (Yayan Ruhian) to become an instrument of death and is set loose on the eve of the annual culling of dissidents. Bedlam ensues as Boy commits bloody martial arts mayhem, inciting a wrath of carnage and blood-letting. As he tries to get his bearings in this delirious realm, Boy soon falls in with a desperate resistance group, all the while bickering with the apparent ghost of his rebellious little sister.

This movie has bits and pieces of everything I like about genre fiction (over the top action violence, sci-fi dystopias, a lil’ horror gore too). But the script is sloppy leading to a lack of emotional and thematic clarity that undermines some great moments. This movie is very stylistically similar to THE RAID: REDEMPTION so fans of that will enjoy this. If you found that movie ghastly - avoid this one.

It has some good action scenes and a few funny moments, not much else. Its story is poorly written and is ultimately ruined by a surprise yet awful twist at the end of the movie. Not much to say here aside from: I’ve seen better. Skip.

Bloody & violent with dark humor sprinkled in. The only reason it’s 1/2 a star shy is because the violence is so graphic that it’s borderline disturbing. But, Bill’s performance was absolutely 5/5!
