Bill Skarsgård stars as "Boy" who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy orphaned, deaf and voiceless. Driven by his inner voice, one which he co-opted from his favorite childhood video game, Boy trains with a mysterious shaman (Yayan Ruhian) to become an instrument of death and is set loose on the eve of the annual culling of dissidents. Bedlam ensues as Boy commits bloody martial arts mayhem, inciting a wrath of carnage and blood-letting. As he tries to get his bearings in this delirious realm, Boy soon falls in with a desperate resistance group, all the while bickering with the apparent ghost of his rebellious little sister.

Tonally broken with comedy stretching on too long without purpose before nihilistic drama deflates all the levity that came before. Showy camera hides fight choreography and makes the whole show a headache-inducing kaleidoscope rather than action can be visually followed. Ugly and dull despite everyone giving 110%. A judicious edit could get a solid 45 minutes out of this, with quick wit and violence rather than something which feels stretched and ultimately pointless.

The acting outshines the story. While this wasn't an exciting new concept, it was entertaining and the body count makes John Wick look like a pacifist. Bill Skarsgard did so much with body language and facial expression that it carried the premise.

H. Jon Benjamin's narration is 88% of the reason i wanted to see this movie and he's excellent. More than that, this is great action movie. They did a lot of stuff I've never seen before. I'll never look at a box grater the same again.
