Vincent Canby New York Times Mr. Rohmer, the most cerebral, most morally committed of French directors, is also the one who seems most aware of the particular influences of geography and meteorology on people. Rated: 4/5 Aug 30, 2004 Full Review Hal Hinson Washington Post It's an utterly superficial movie -- a celebration of superficiality -- and utterly charming. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Rohmer knows exactly what he is doing here. He has no great purpose, but an interesting small one: He wants to observe the everyday behavior of a new class of French person, the young professionals. Rated: 3/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid It's an intelligent film about shallow people, filled with the director's usual observant touches. Rated: 3/4 Feb 20, 2024 Full Review Terry Francis Southern Voice (Atlanta) Boyfriends and Girlfriends is essentially a cheerful meditation on how we summon up the nerve to act out and justify to ourselves our own instincts about how we should live our lives. May 8, 2023 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) An exquisite farce…with a quartet of lovers to barter…Whoever gets to see them will not forget them. Audience Member #6 in Rohmer's comedies & proverbs series Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Rohmer presenta la naturaleza humana como nadie Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Speelt zich af te midden la ville nouvelle de Cergy-Pontoise, en alle krankzinnigheid die daarbij hoort. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member how many of us have come across characters like this in real life.....excellent Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member This is much more stilted than many of Rohmer's films, with the actors feeling very staged and formal. This doesn't feel like a commentary on the shallow aspects of the character's lives either--it just seems like wooden acting. That said, it still engages due in large part to Chaulet's presence. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk. Maybe it's that the translation doesn't do the dialogue justice, but I couldn't muster any interest in the stilted, self-centered analytical musings of any of the characters. Add to this a decision to tell the story in an uncinematic fashion-- static camera, no action, flat colors (at least in my VHS version), and drab settings-- and you get one colossal bore. Oddly, I recognize that this isn't really that far removed from a film by Whit Stillman, whom I love, and whose films are often given the same criticism.
