Rated 1.5/5 Stars •  Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review Regal R 70/100 - While it was a refreshing surprise to see vince vaughn play a more or less serious character outside of his typecast role, the movie fell short of its potential. there are 2 major problems with this film, the the first being a complete lack of backstory. they elude to the fact that he's a fantastic boxer which apparently becomes a driving force for the film, but there is literally 0 set up for it. they dont show any scenes of him boxing in the past and barely even mention it throughout the film yet its pivotal for the entire plot. The 2nd issue is unfortunately this film is 20 years too late. Vince played this role well, so it's sad to see how his age really effected the fight scenes. Most likely due to a combination of sloppy fight choreography and age, the action scenes felt rigid and lacking. I dont need vince to be doing 360 spinning wheel kicks, but you can tell he is stiff and it makes watching the fights awkward, similar to the mike tyson v jake paul fight (even putting aside the fact that he is tall and lanky so his movements are going to look naturally awkward). all in all, a decent movie but not something to write home about. Yes, but a movie that's supposed to be based in reality. If you don't care at all about acting, writing, or reality, then is may be good for you. Before finally watching this today I had passed by it many times while scrolling through Netflix but never chose to watch because just the cover photo screamed B-grade movie and this type of film seemed strange for Vince Vaughn. The movie feels not only cheap but as if it was written & directed by someone who spent 0 time researching and dealing with real life people who could advise how the criminal/prison life element actually is. Except for well known actors(Vince Vaughn & the woman who plays his wife) you’d think this was a film done by complete amateurs. I’m typically the type of person that always finishes a movie even if it’s awful but this one was really tough to watch until the end.
