Catherine Wheatley Sight & Sound Much is asked of non-professional actor Thomas Schubert and it is ultimately his performance that raises the film to the level of the sublime. Jul 9, 2018 Full Review Michael Nordine Village Voice A film of unreconciled impulses, Breathing is by turns vaguely sentimental and cooly detached in a manner that's ultimately more off-putting than it is complementary. Sep 4, 2012 Full Review V.A. Musetto New York Post Elegant cinematography by Martin Gschlacht, one of Austria's most sought-after lensers, gives "Breathing" added depth. Rated: 3/4 Aug 31, 2012 Full Review Patrick Gamble CineVue Behind the film's copious themes and social criticisms lies an intoxicating appreciation of life as a fragile and delicate gift which can so often be taken for granted. Rated: 4/5 Jan 5, 2019 Full Review Isabel Stevens ViewLondon Thomas Schubert's turn as Roman that is the stand out feature of the film; everything from his boyish face and vacant stare to his withdrawn body language is entirely convincing. Rated: 5/5 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Jamie Neish HeyUGuys A relaxed, prudent tone is established, allowing for an honest, conceivable and faultless performance to be administered by newcomer Schubert. jake s A juvenile delinquent gets a work release job with at the city coroner department... high jinks ensue, but Austria is close enough to the Eastern Bloc that the high jinks are appropriately soul crushing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Another great example for Austrian cinema. This film comes along very quiet without being boring. It's a character study close to the coming of age genre, at times a little depressing, but it never loses a certain flicker of hope. Also noteworthy: Thomas Schubert who delivers a fine performance was casted as an amateur actor. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member The type of movie that makes you stop, think and reflect Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie communicates through the visuals and does not rely on words, and it's very refreshing in the sense that it suffices in pulling the audience in the quite complicated state of mind of its main character. The only thing I didn't like was sound editing and music; it's possible to add to the movie experience without making it over-dramatic. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent debut feature, reminiscente of the Dardenne Brothers. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member A young man that's been in orphanages or in jail all his lifetime tries to start a new life. He gets a job at a morgue and we follow him and his quite depressing life. The pacing here is great and the development is neat - we get to know many characters. The imagery is OK, the acting is OK and the atmosphere is fine. This is Karl Markovics' directorial debut. A guy that's probably most known from his acting in "The Counterfeiters". His film is good and worth a watch, but it's not some mindblowing stuff. It's getting better and better towards the end though. That's a good thing. 7 out of 10 squirting beers.
