Peg (Marlee Matlin) is the deaf mother of a hearing child, Lisa (Allison Silva). When Peg's husband is killed in a drunk-driving accident, she suffers a breakdown and her mother, Marge (Lee Remick), steps in to temporarily take care of Lisa. Problems arise when Peg recovers and Marge does not want to surrender Lisa. Despite the objections of her husband (Josef Sommer), Marge files for legal custody of her granddaughter, and a bitter mother-daughter conflict ensues.

As a grandmother of deaf children I think this is an accurate depiction of the family of deaf children. it is a real life situation and I applaud the cast of this movie. Been there done that I am sorry to say but this could help another family avoid falling into the same trap,

Wonderful performances by a talented cast, including Marlee Matlin in her first speaking role, cannot quite overcome a melodramatic story in which a deaf woman nearly loses custody of her daughter to the mother who never understand her. I always regards the deaf culture for the rights to communicate with hearing people to give great friendships and relationships that can make you understand positively.
