This feature-length documentary chronicles the long-awaited return of pop royalty, BTS. From acclaimed director Bao Nguyen (The Stringer, The Greatest Night in Pop) and renowned producers, This Machine (Martha, Karol G) and HYBE, the film offers unprecedented access, following BTS as they come back together to begin a reunion set to be etched in pop culture history, while reflecting on the journey that transformed seven Korean members into global icons. Since their debut in 2013, BTS built one of the most devoted fan communities in the world. After completing South Korea's mandatory military service, the seven members reunite in Los Angeles to make music together, returning to a shared creative space shaped by time apart and personal change. As millions of fans await the comeback of the decade, BTS confronts quieter questions: how to begin again, how to honor the past without being bound by it, and how to move forward together. In Bao Nguyen’s documentary, BTS: THE RETURN, the director doesn’t present a sanitized version of their story. Instead, viewers are privy to meetings with management, where the members’ artistry doesn’t always align with the business model’s bottom line.

The movie opens with 7 guys, seemingly carefree, playing in the beach, filming themselves and talking to their fans. It takes a minute before you realise these are 7 of the most famous men in the world right now. We then get a fascinating look inside the making of their comeback album, and their day to day lives while making it. It’s intimate, and special, and doesn’t put any masks over the realities of making a record with so much pressure behind them. The shots are cinematic, yet personal with the help of handheld footage shot by the guys themselves. It’s a really special documentary that I feel we will come to look back on as time goes by, and their band reaches new heights. It pairs perfectly with the live concert on Netflix, where they performed the songs they made during the documentary. Will absolutely be rewatching both.

What does it mean for the biggest group in the world to return after four years? That is the question at the center of this film. I was surprised by how moved I was watching this. It wasn’t just about their process of reuniting and creating their album ARIRANG, but it touched on so many relatable topics like what it means to get older, how relationships change and how you want to move through the world. I found myself reflecting on my own life as a result. It showcases their work in the studio, and pressure of their current state; having been at the top before completing mandatory military service, and not knowing whether the world has moved on. It shows the delicate balance of wanting to please your fanbase while contemplating what feels right as artists who have evolved. It was shot beautifully, and felt intimate, truthful and, at times, poignant. It shows the inner workings of a group that seems larger than life, but is really just, as RM says, seven normal boys from Korea.
