Audience Member Written by Kim Ki Duk, the debut feature by South Korean filmmaker Lee Ju-hyong tells the tale of infiltrate North Korean spies in South Korea who pose as a family in order to quietly assassinate anyone Pyongyang believes a traitor. The catch here is that eventually, this game of disguise becomes too hard to keep up, particularly when they are moved to a house next to another family whose everyday problems and imperfections influence them deeply in an emotional way. There is no doubt that Red Family aims to use the theme of family as a metaphor for an uncomfortable socio-political situation. While the approach is fresh and admirable, the point is too heavily insisted upon. So much so, in fact, that by the end of the film, the atmosphere has fallen from gripping thriller drama to cheesy melodrama. This underwhelms the initial interesting and original premise implied in the beginning. Thankfully, Lee Ju-hyong is still revealed as an interesting newcomer on the international scene with his technical competence and a clear ability to connect with his subjects on an emotional level.
