This film is a reboot of the original movie The Bullet Train, from 50 years ago which inspired the Hollywood blockbuster Speed. Director Shinji Higuchi, known for merging spectacular visuals with human drama in works like Shin Godzilla, creates another panic-suspense thriller, depicting the intense struggles of those racing to save lives under extreme conditions. This film stars Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, reuniting with director Higuchi after Doomsday: The Sinking of Japan. With special cooperation from the East Japan Railway Company, the production used real bullet trains and railway facilities to craft extremely realistic visuals, which were seamlessly enhanced with cutting-edge visual effects. Packed with non-stop suspense, this high-stakes thriller will keep audiences breathless from start to finish.

Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Just buckle up to enjoy director Shinj Higuchi’s (“Shin Godzilla”) empty-headed thrill ride that’s edited so fast you won’t notice, mostly, the bumps along the way. Rated: 2.5/4 May 2, 2025 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com What makes “Bullet Train Explosion” so charming is that its creators don’t try to reinvent their chosen genre with this oversized, defiantly corny throwback. Rated: 3/4 Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Todd Gilchrist Variety “Bullet Train Explosion” feels like a blockbuster made for adults, where the priority is throwing challenges and complications at smart characters instead of sparking conflict with cheap narrative shortcuts and bad, even dumb choices. Apr 23, 2025 Full Review Daniel Gorman In Review Online The film is a paean to sturdy, reliable professionalism in the face of unbearable stress, but it never manages to build up a real head of steam. May 3, 2025 Full Review Russ Simmons KKFI-FM (Kansas City) “Bullet Train Explosion” is overlong and often silly but is well produced and lives up to its foreboding title. Rated: 3/5 May 2, 2025 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Takes too long to reach its destination. Rated: C+ May 1, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Alan W What sounds initially like a Japanese Speed crossed with an Irwin Allen disaster movie remade in the age of social media turns out in fact to be a reboot/kinda sequel to a 1975 Japanese movie with the same Japanese name (but simply called Bullet Train in English) that certainly predated Speed. In director Shinji Higuchi's proficiently executed Netflix movie, bombs planted on a bullet train heading to Tokyo are set to go off if it goes below 100km/h and it's up to the cool, calm and competent staff, both on board and in the control room, to save the day. (This film is clearly made with the cooperation and blessing from Japanese Rail.) An old-fashioned, often over-earnest and preposterous mainstream thriller where the train becomes a microcosm of Japanese society and honorable people will no doubt turn out fine, storylines involving a recently disgraced politician, a tech-bro and a publicly vilified figure are contrived up to find drama and fill up time in between set pieces where the train has to either avoid crashing into some unmoveable obstacle or mount a daring rescue mission, mainly to cull the enormous cast onboard to focus on the remaining core of passengers who's somehow left behind. Anyone who has seen last year's BBC series Nightsleeper will find the narrative beats here coincidentally familiar but I can assure you that show didn't then pivot into some solution that resembles an A-level Maths question, or the philosophical trolley problem. Whilst I do like the way this film connects with the 1975 film, it's certainly far-fetched, especially for a non-Japanese audience, and one's enjoyment of (and suspension of disbelief for) this film will depend very much on your appreciation/overlooking the film's more seemingly idiosyncratic elements that are unequivocally Japanese in its nature. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/25 Full Review Peter K It was well-executed but lacked the depth of its predecessor: "Bullet Train". Maybe too, it was that it reminded me of how woeful the state of rapid-transit in the US is. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review Hafidz N This film features relatable characters as well as several actors whose performances are excellent. Although the story is simple, the teamwork is truly impressive. It also creates intense tension throughout. However, the villain’s motivation is weak, and some characters are not properly introduced. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/26/25 Full Review Aly G Playing with the minds and using a teenager to execute such bombing… unique, but really? Teenagers? I think exploiting them like that doesn’t sound so convincing especially the narration was done almost at the end. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/21/25 Full Review Dan D This movie is awful and far worse than the original. Passenger reactions are more over the top. The reason for the bombing was stupid...I'm mad at my father so I'm going to blow up a train. Why blow up a train when you blew up your tormentor? Just dumb. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Audience Member Truly astonishing, couldn't have asked for a better movie. It's super exciting and one that you'll not wanna miss. The storyline is beautiful and outstanding fantastic. Everything about this film deserves a five star and more!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Read all reviews
