      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Campy and clichéd, Burlesque wastes its talented cast (including a better-than-expected Christina Aguilera) on a movie that wavers uncertainly between "bad" and "so bad it's good."

Jonathan M Rotten Tomatoes viewed with their head up their ass! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review J. M I feel like the negative reviewers confused this movie with Showgirls. It's not Showgirls, and it's thoroughly entertaining. Christina didn't put herself in line for an oscar with this performance but she wasn't bad. In fact, she was really likable in the acting scenes and just WOW in the song-and-dance scenes. She certainly deserved to get more acting opportunities after this; what happened? The whole cast is strong. (I mean, Cher? Stanley Tucci? Of course it's strong.) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/16/23 Full Review Cole T Acting overall was very weak, shockingly even on Cher's part. Extremely slow and not nearly as exciting or intriguing as it lets on. A very cliche rom com with some somewhat decent musical numbers added in. Overall movie was very cliche and not original at all. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/19/23 Full Review Ash P Cheesy, but classy. This might be one of those movies I call a guilty pleasure because the music is really enjoyable, the acting is pretty good especially for every boy and girl playing their roles well in this movie that has a cliche here and there. Not the best with the story but at least learning between each was passable. Yeah, you could say this is an average movie if you're into Show Firls, Chicago or anything involving story and music. Y'all can say I'm a sucker for those kinds of movies, whether for kids or adults. 6/10. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/29/23 Full Review Francisco Ivn L A great musical that will make any fans of sexy, sultry music have a fun time for nearly 2 hours. Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Awful. Mar 30, 2019 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal It's impossible to know if [Christina Aguilera's] actually acting, since the music-video cutting rhythms don't give her time to sustain so much as a compound sentence, not that the script provides any. Mar 28, 2019 Full Review Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle As Burlesque ground along its obvious and well-worn path, my inner voice indeed shouted, "Take it off," though my request was directed toward the projection booth rather than the dancers onstage. Rated: 1.5/5 Mar 28, 2019 Full Review Alison Foreman Mashable The glory of what Burlesque does well outshines any mistake. Nov 30, 2021 Full Review James McMahon NME (New Musical Express) ...most people unfortunate to be involved in them come away with deep rooted and painful psychological scars. I'll conclude by saying I can't see that being any different for anyone who spends any time with Burlesque. Rated: 0.5/5 May 25, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse It has no story arc, no dramatic tension, just a lot of bump-and-grind. That'll be enough for people with a taste for camp but like the art form it is named after the movie is all tease and no follow through. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 31, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
