Critics Consensus

Campy and clichéd, Burlesque wastes its talented cast (including a better-than-expected Christina Aguilera) on a movie that wavers uncertainly between "bad" and "so bad it's good."

Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Awful. Mar 30, 2019 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal It's impossible to know if [Christina Aguilera's] actually acting, since the music-video cutting rhythms don't give her time to sustain so much as a compound sentence, not that the script provides any. Mar 28, 2019 Full Review Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle As Burlesque ground along its obvious and well-worn path, my inner voice indeed shouted, "Take it off," though my request was directed toward the projection booth rather than the dancers onstage. Rated: 1.5/5 Mar 28, 2019 Full Review John Stark Mac the Movie Guy Know that this grade reflects time, multiple viewings, and the ability to accept what shouldn’t work about this, and instead feels so campy. I have let it grow on me. Rated: 77/100 Aug 29, 2025 Full Review Alison Foreman Mashable The glory of what Burlesque does well outshines any mistake. Nov 30, 2021 Full Review James McMahon NME (New Musical Express) ...most people unfortunate to be involved in them come away with deep rooted and painful psychological scars. I'll conclude by saying I can't see that being any different for anyone who spends any time with Burlesque. Rated: 0.5/5 May 25, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Nick P Some movies aren’t just entertainment—they’re timestamps. Burlesque is one of them for me. I first watched Burlesque when I was six years old at my cousin’s house. Her mom put it on, and the room lit up—not just from the glitter and stage lights on screen, but with laughter, excitement, and something electric in the air. Back then, we were neighbors. I remember running barefoot with my cousin through the big green lawns that separated our semi-large houses, cutting through that small, lush forest that felt like a magical world of our own. Watching Burlesque in that setting was like stepping into a fantasy of feathers, sequins, dreams, and fire. The story follows Ali (Christina Aguilera), a small-town girl with a big voice who escapes hardship and lands in a glamorous L.A. burlesque lounge. Sure, the critics weren’t kind to it, but let’s be real—six-year-old me didn’t care about the Tomatometer. I saw sparkle, ambition, and power. I saw women owning the stage and their identities. I saw Cher as a goddess of survival. And I saw dreams that looked bigger than life… but somehow felt reachable. The music stayed with me for weeks, especially Christina’s powerhouse numbers. Even as a child, I felt the raw emotion in her voice. I didn’t know what it meant to “leave it all behind” yet, but something in her eyes told me that this was a movie about becoming who you are—no matter where you start. That stuck with me. Like Moulin Rouge!, Burlesque became part of my personal mythology. It’s loud, bold, a little messy—and that’s exactly what made it beautiful. Looking back, I see it was more than just a fun musical. It was a vision of transformation, of finding your voice when no one else hears it yet. I still think of that night at my cousin’s. The way we danced after the credits. The way we all believed, just for a moment, that we belonged on a stage too. That’s the magic of Burlesque. That’s why it’s still gold to me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Tina T My husband and I love this movie! We have a copy, and we watch it often. Sometimes, I fast forward through just to see the dance numbers. The story is also great. Drama, romance, lots of style, sultryness, and Cher and Christina. What's not to like? Are the critics all uptight religious fanatics? This movie is a great date night film. Finally, an entertaining story for adults with an amazing soundtrack and compelling characters, and no murderor mayhem. Ignore the critics, and watch it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/16/25 Full Review David S Netflix recommended this as one of the most rewatched movies on Netflix. Glad I watched it. Sometimes critics miss the mark on a classic but the data is in and critics are wrong about this one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/10/25 Full Review Anitta M If u dont like its ur problem… is A masterpiece!!! Love u Xtina and Cher … Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/25 Full Review Karen M I love this movie. Bought it on Amazon Prime and it's regularly played, whether I want an uplift from the songs, especially 46 mins into it or whether I want a great background movie. The soundtrack is amazing, a simple storyline and a good cast, I love Cher and since Burlesque, Christina Aguilera. If you like musicals, there is plenty in this to keep you happy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Mike L Christina Aguilera's singing performances are as good as it gets since the invention of the phonograph. The dramatic side of the movie is cliche & predictable, but hearing C.A. dominate the entire history of female vocals makes it a must watch.
