Christina Aguilera
Possessing a singularly powerful vocal style, Christina Aguilera burst onto the scene as a teen idol in the late 1990s, beginning her career as a member of the new "Mickey Mouse Club" (Disney Channel, 1989-1994). Her breakout single "Genie in a Bottle" (1999) was bubblegum pop at its finest and helped earn the singer a Best New Artist trophy at the 2000 Grammy Awards, a category that her rival Britney Spears was favored to win. Aguilera shed her girl-next-door image for her sophomore album Stripped (2002), where she traded in her Mouseketeer charm for lingerie-inspired outfits and body art. Controversy clung to the singer like one of the skimpy designer gowns she began to wear and she was often criticized for her unapologetic attitude towards how "Dirrty" (the title of her 2002 hit single) a girl can get. Aguilera was a master of reinvention, from overcoming an abusive childhood, to channeling Madonna and Marilyn Monroe in her provocative music videos, to raising a family. Aguilera made her feature film debut opposite Cher in "Burlesque" (2010) and signed on to be one of the hosts of the reality TV singing competition, "The Voice" (NBC, 2011- ), both bold moves by an artist who never shied away from a challenge and was considered by many to possess the greatest voice of her generation.
