Kambole Campbell One Room With A View One wishes that this movie could be erased from existence - but for now, let's hope that the burning wreckage acts as a warning to never, ever do this again. Rated: 1/5 Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) If I'm not dreaming, I've just seen one of the boldest mainstream American movies in ages. Rated: 4/5 Sep 13, 2017 Full Review Nigel Andrews Financial Times Occasionally it's as if The Lego Movie is reaching out a long, friendly arm to Inside Out and falling into the chasm between. But the film is inventive too. Rated: 3/5 Aug 7, 2017 Full Review Jason Best What's On TV It's hard to decide what is most annoying about this cinematic botch: the ugly animation, the contrived story or the blatant product placement, or the fact that the filmmakers spoil almost every gag by underlining it twice. Rated: 1/5 Dec 20, 2020 Full Review Leigh Monson Substream Magazine It's a horrifying scene set atop a pile of trash, but the pure absurdity of its existence is enough to make one laugh in shock and disbelief. Rated: 1/5 Sep 25, 2020 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com No one beyond the smallest of children should be entertained by this shameless money grab that fails in virtually every way. Ry R. Easy 1.2/10. The best thing about The Emoji Movie is that…at least it is better than FoodFight…other than that…I don’t have much to say, some parts are enjoyable…it does have a good theme song..but..the animation is really ugly, the story doesn’t make much sense, and the voice acting is bad, the humor is so bad, and the characters are so annoying! I don’t think I listed half of what’s in here! I can only recommend this to people who just want the slightest bit of entertainment and just to recover from FoodFight if you watched that movie. Other than that…I would rather not putting this on my watchlist. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/01/25 Full Review Leviathan M Not as bad as Son of the Mask, but very horrible. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/28/25 Full Review Bopperbinks B. The movie is mid and makes too much corny and cringe social media references. It better that Megamind and the doom syndicate though. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/26/25 Full Review brayden w I gotta say: it's not as bad as everybody made it out to be. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely not good, but it's not the absolute cinematic disaster that the hype train led you to believe. Let's start with what actually works, or at least, what doesn't make you want to rip your hair out. The concept, while goofy, has some potential. A world inside a smartphone where emojis have lives? Okay, I can see where they were going with that. And some of the visual gags with the apps and the digital world were kinda clever, I'll admit. There were a few moments where I chuckled, maybe even a quick laugh. It's got some bright colors and constant movement, which, if you're a little kid, probably keeps your attention. But here's the thing: "not as bad as people say" is a really low bar. The story itself is pretty bland and predictable. It follows the typical "hero's journey" formula, but with no real stakes or emotional depth. You've got your main character, Gene, who's an outcast because he can show multiple emotions (gasp!), and he goes on a quest to become "normal." It's a fine message, I guess, but it's delivered in such a by-the-numbers way that it feels uninspired. The characters are another weak point. They're mostly one-dimensional, defined solely by their emoji function. You don't really connect with them, and their motivations are pretty basic. The humor, when it's not completely flat, often leans on tired puns or product placement, which gets old real fast. It felt less like a genuine story and more like a long advertisement for various apps. Ultimately, The Emoji Movie is just... forgettable. It's not offensively terrible, but it's also not memorable or impactful in any way. It's the kind of movie you put on for background noise, or for very young kids who aren't critical viewers yet. It had a chance to be something fun and creative, given the unique setting, but it just played it too safe and too generic. It exists, and that's about the strongest statement I can make about it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/25 Full Review Joey L It was funny at 3am. I MIGHT HAVE GONE COO COO WATCHING THIS BUT IT WAS COOL I GUESS?!?! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/21/25 Full Review Victor E Obvious product placement but if you’re going to complain about it why buy a ticket to an obvious product placement movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Read all reviews
