With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana. Kayce and his teammates -- Pete Calvin, Belle Skinner, Andrea Cruz, and Miles Kittle -- must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region's war on violence with their duty to their families.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Marshals confines Kayce Dutton within a dim procedural that lacks the narrative spark and intrigue that Yellowstone managed instantly, making this one ham-fisted trek.

The prolific Sheridan didn’t work on the show, which might explain why it’s a compact, somewhat predictable, network procedural. Go to Full Review

Plays less like the next chapter in the Dutton saga than a side expedition, adjacent to the family legacy but not meaningfully advancing it. Go to Full Review

In truth, it’s too enamored of Dutton lore to let Kayce stand on his own, let alone the show around him. Go to Full Review

Kayce’s life is now a kind of TV show that you’ve seen countless times before. It doesn’t have the same artfulness behind it, and the pacing barely leaves time for sweeping shots of the Montana valley or reflection of any kind. Go to Full Review

The franchise spinoff switches gears from Yellowstone's complicated, dynastic story world to a crime-fighting TV procedural. Go to Full Review

Gretchen B @gbaneyx 12h The acting and writing is completely uninteresting. The characters are flat. There's absolutely no spark. I waded through 4 episodes hoping for it to pick up. Nada. Waster of time. See more sasha C @RT64543701 17h The biggest issue is, some characters are just not meant to be main characters, and Kayce Dutton is one of them. He worked fine as a side character in Yellowstone, but building an entire show around him doesn’t work. He doesn’t carry the screen the way a lead should. His performance comes off awkward at times, and instead of feeling intense or complex, he often just looks lost and confused. It honestly gave me secondhand embarrassment in certain scenes. The rest of the Marshal team doesn’t help either. The characters feel shallow, overly cocky, and the acting doesn't land. There’s no real depth or connection to them, so it’s hard to care about what’s happening. It feels like they’re trying to force personalities rather than let them develop naturally. Overall, the show feels tasteless, rushed, and poorly written. It plays out as a generic cop show with a Yellowstone label slapped on it, but without any of the heart, depth, or strong performances that made the original worth watching. See more Angie W @RT98065242 21h Completely flat, one-note show. Gear up, chase some people for an unknown reason, blow up something, and go drink at the local bar. Repeat the next day. Disappointing, as I did appreciate Kayce's character on Yellowstone. Waste of the talents of Gil Birmingham and Moses Brings Plenty. See more Ben B @RT03051504 1d A series where the main character was the future heir to a massive empire in the original show, but is now a small-scale farmer with a side job. On top of that, he is dealing with complexes and psychological issues that he had actually already overcome in the main series See more Gino H. @ginoh 2d It starts off a bit slow, but stick with it. It really finds its footing. What feels like a slow burn at first ends up paying off, and it’s turning out to be much better than I expected. I do think some of the early reviews were a bit harsh, as it’s the kind of show that rewards patience. See more C V @HollywoodBigShot 2d Tuned in for Yellowstone version 2 and ended up with NCIS Montana. Typical Hollywood formula writing. The only reason the critics are giving it a better score than the audience is that the series writers have checked all the virtue signaling boxes. This is not Taylor Sheridan writing, and it shows. Total bait and switch. Very disappointing. See more Read all reviews
