What to Know

Critics Consensus

Young Sherlock doesn't aim to recreate Conan Doyle's work, rather, it takes pride in its liberal adaptation, delivering Guy Ritchie's signature blend of precise entertainment, sly style, and ingratiating characters.

This is a smooth-brained Sherlock. Anyone hoping for the puzzle-cracking pleasures of Benedict Cumberbatch’s BBC series, or any real character development, will be disappointed. Go to Full Review

While the other characters in the series talk a lot about how smart Sherlock is, Ritchie hasn’t got the patience or confidence to persuasively demonstrate this. Go to Full Review

One of the best series of the year with an amazingly fresh take on Sherlock Holmes with a career defining performance from Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Go to Full Review

Young Sherlock succeeds because it treats youth not as novelty but as a crucible. It explores the making of a mind, not just the solving of a mystery. The overall trajectory of season 1 is confident and engaging. Go to Full Review

Amusing but shallow, Young Sherlock passes time without displaying the magic that turned Old Sherlock into a memorable icon. Go to Full Review

Brendan M @RT76082430 2d Good cast (Moriarty is excellent), and it starts strong, but wears as the series goes on. Some of the character arcs are a little unfaithful to the original work which I don't appreciate. I'm a fan of Guy Richie's work but this was a rare miss for me. See more One_Broken_ S @RT87511685 3d Here are 3 reasons to watch Young Sherlock:more Sherlock Holmes lore:the casting of Hero Fiennes &of course, the Guy Ritchie stamp. I read that streaming films are now constructed with the assumption that viewers watch while doing other things. Therefore, main plot points have to be repeated at least 2x per episode. 2 cons: By the 2nd ep,the darkness made the ep unwatchable. My 2nd con is the casting of Lestrade. Thanks for not making Sherlock’s brother an uggo;Moriarty has the charisma of a paper clip, but to not make Lestrade the adorable, sweet yet snarky, very sexy Lestrade of the Cumberbatch "Sherlock Holmes" is a crime against character development. B.C.’ Lestrade was one of the few people who dared to try to keep Sherlock in check.Plus,he was dreamy.Your Lestrade has the masculine energy of my grandma, who’s dead. Lighten yr scenes, recast Lestrade&I will use my mighty pen on social media to sing the praises of "Young Sherlock".It has such great potential. See more iamnotanumber41 T @Iamnotanumber41 4d I thought this was going to be an episodic Sherlock that I wouldn’t have to binge. I was very wrong. This show is made to binge on a weekend. Great writing and atmosphere. Sherlock was more wimpy than I liked but I still had a lot of fun with this show. See more Lou M @Zipperella 4d Bloody brilliant!! Smart show, well placed actors; scenes, scripts all good. Enjoy!! See more honestly M. @honestlymj 6d I was nervous and skeptical; but this was my favorite show I watched in the past year. I finished it in 24 hours. The characters and their interactions are woven together beautifully. Moriarty’s hinted darkness and progression into villainy is spectacularly written and acted. A story showing how these characters become who they are as their famous adult nemeses is really clever. Also- BARS! Some of these lines just casually spoken are truths I’d pause to meditate about. A little scared they can’t capture the same thing in an additional season. But these 8 episodes are magical regardless. See more Mone C @Mone77 Apr 13 Season 1 was really great: script, cast, direction, adaptation to the time period. I also found the mystery of the season very appealing, it held my attention well. The only point that made me not give this season a 10 was the characterization of Sherlock Holmes: I thought he was portrayed too effeminately, almost bordering on homosexuality. That, for me, was the discordant point of the season and what I didn't like. Otherwise, the season is very good. See more Read all reviews
