What to Know

Critics Consensus

Bushwick's sociopolitical subtext gives it more heft than the average action thriller, but those ideas are given short shrift in what amounts to a disappointing shoot-'em-up.

Anthony Lane The New Yorker The effects are scarcely special, and Bushwick locals will have many bones to pick, but somehow the movie gets to you, with its doomy political soothsaying. Sep 4, 2017 Full Review Simon Crook Empire Magazine Delivering knockout action and political punch, this blazing siren of a B movie imagines America at civil war with vicious force. Sequel, please. Rated: 4/5 Aug 31, 2017 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) The film works as a hollow tale of "resistance", with less of a stake in the politics of collective action than in the visceral business of individual survival. Rated: 2/5 Aug 27, 2017 Full Review Kip Mooney Fresh Fiction Provides relentless thrills on a scale beyond its small budget. That's impressive, even if the finished product isn't. Rated: C+ Aug 10, 2021 Full Review Howard Gorman NME (New Musical Express) Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion use an immersive fly on the wall direction style to really heighten the audience's sensation of the anxiety, tension and ferocity of the home front war zone they created. Jun 11, 2021 Full Review Alex Flood NME (New Musical Express) Bautista is excellent and Lyle Vincent's clever camerawork means the battle scenes feel ultra-immersive. Korra N This is what the Red Dawn remake should've been. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Feasible T The movie started well, and maintained it's pace for the first 10 or so minutes. However when it would be natural for the pace to pick up, it slowed down and vice versa. The main characters have potential that is never really explored in any depth, and all side characters are there to either die, or be randomly violent. It is clear what the point of the movie was, with an obvious message that any life is expendable. But the message falls flat. The plot doesn't draw you in, the action doesn't scratch an itch, and overall it fails at being an action movie an a drama. It was just entertaining enough for me to say "wow that was bad" as the credits rolled and not half way through. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Dallas N Caught it recently on streaming. Had never heard of it so I had no expectations, but thought it was a decent action romp. Brittany Snow got to display some dramatic chops, and Dave Bautista was capable in his role. If you like survival/post-apocalyptic themed movies this might be worth checking out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Steve J Bushwick feels like a raw, unfiltered experience, and that’s part of its unique charm. It almost looks like the entire thing was shot on a cell phone, giving it this gritty, boots-on-the-ground feel that makes the chaos and tension hit even harder. That stripped-down approach really works in its favor—it doesn’t rely on flashy effects, but instead pulls you into the heart of the action, making you feel like you’re right there in the streets alongside the characters. Dave Bautista brings such a grounded, powerful performance, blending action-hero toughness with a surprising vulnerability. It’s like a 70s throwback with that low-budget, high-intensity vibe that makes it stand out from the crowd. The film’s rawness and Bautista’s presence give it a cool, DIY edge that’s hard to find in today’s polished action flicks. It’s a must-see for anyone craving something a little different. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review alan g Why does Hokeywood keep casting Barrista. He can't act and it is painful to watch him flex and grunt. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/11/24 Full Review GM M Something different and the acting is great. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews
