Rogan Graham Little White Lies The warm relationship she has with her director daughter means moments that could feel voyeuristic in another’s hands, only underscore the film’s underlying message – the necessity of matrilineal storytelling. Rated: 4/5 Jun 27, 2024 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Another type of documentary might have done more investigating on the subject of Michael, or even made his mysterious existence the film’s whole point. Well, this isn’t Lina Soualem’s purpose, and it’s an arresting family record. Jun 25, 2024 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I like the film -- but I think there should be more of the film. Feb 1, 2024 Full Review Lisa Laman Collider The horrors of reality often erase individuals and places that seemed unmovable before. But footage endures, as do memories and witness testimony. Those elements intertwine in Bye Bye Tiberias and offer a clear path through “the gate to past sorrows.” Rated: 8/10 Feb 20, 2024 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) The film uses her family’s story to explore her peoples’ deep connection to land and the tension inherent in being part of a diaspora Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan (Medium) Bye Bye Tiberias is a documentary that explores the yearning for family and the devastating results of forced exile and separation Jan 23, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Dalia R I found myself unexpectedly drawn into its gentle exploration of personal lineage and collective memory. It reminded me of how, across generations, families adapt, endure, and carry forward traditions in subtle, often unspoken ways. The director’s close look at the lives of four women in her lineage—from a home shaped by upheaval and shifting borders—sheds a delicate light on how historical forces color everyday existence. In subtle moments, the film makes you feel as though you’re leafing through an old family album, pausing to marvel at a distant relative’s laughter or quietly honoring the weight of their sacrifices. Yet, while the narrative’s intimacy and poetry can be stirring, it also felt like the story hovered near big questions without fully confronting them. I yearned for more context around the broader historical backdrop that shaped these women’s decisions, not just a personal ode to their struggles. More depth would have offered a richer understanding of the cultural terrain they navigated and how that set the stage for their resilience. Despite these reservations, I left the screening appreciative of how such a film can spark memories of my own family’s journey and the unspoken bonds that persist, even when time and geography pull us far apart.
