      Critics Consensus

Director Neil Jordan remains as expert as ever when it comes to setting a chilling mood, but Byzantium struggles to match its creepily alluring atmosphere with a suitably compelling story.

Jelisije J A great modern day vampire movie of a mother and daughter vampires duo struggling with themselves and each other of how to survive the world day by day. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Christina L Best movie since interview with a vampire! Yes we need a part 2! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/25/23 Full Review Vito P Neil Jordan tries his hand at vampires again and this time he manages an interesting story with a higher level of maturity, even if he embellishes everything a little too much. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/02/24 Full Review steve d Ok script made better by its strong cast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review isla s This is a fairly atmospheric watch, with a solid performance by Saoirse Ronan. Its somewhat dark and fairly sinister in tone I suppose, although it does feel like the whole vampire category of horror/thriller film has been, pardon the pun, done to death by now, so in that sort of a sense its fairly predictable. I liked the use of music in it and I suppose it didn't feel as tacky as some of the similar films aimed at teens do (like Twilight etc.). The cast is good and it was interesting to see in terms of it being set in Britain, rather than the US, for a change but I can't say I found it entirely engrossing or anything like that. Its ok and I liked that Tom Hollander (who plays Rev in the BBC sitcom of the same name) is in it but its not a great watch, so I wouldn't expressly recommend it as such, no. Amy Taubin Film Comment Magazine Arterton and Ronan's characters have the determination and brio of true heroines. Aug 29, 2019 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator It's melancholia at its most trying. Sep 5, 2018 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk Arresting, gory and surprising, this flight-of-horror fantasy is wonderfully acted for post-Twilight vamp lovers craving something altogether eerier but emotionally resonant. Rated: 4/5 Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review From the stunning compositions to Eleanor’s thoughtful narration to the poetic drama of Jordan’s treatment, the theme of storytelling itself unfolds and transforms what may be considered familiar vampire material into operatic fantasy. Rated: 4/4 Sep 2, 2022 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse An elegant, if slightly dull film, that tries to bring something new to the Twilightized vampire genre, but staked by flawed storytelling. Rated: 2/5 Jan 31, 2021 Full Review Brent McKnight The Last Thing I See Occasionally bloody and violent, "Byzantium" is primarily a somber tale of a woeful, savage life.
