Caligula

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Endlessly perverse and indulgent, Caligula throws in hardcore sex every time the plot threatens to get interesting.

If you want a turn-on, turn-off Caligula. Stay home and read Robert Graves' I, Claudius, it's much sexier. Go to Full Review

Caligula is sickening, utterly worthless, shameful trash. If it is not the worst film I have ever seen, that makes it all the more shameful: People with talent allowed themselves to participate in this travesty. Go to Full Review

…it doesn’t take a lot of tinkering to ruin a film, and the much-tinkered with 1980 version of Caligula is a mess, with the guts of Vidal’s script removed, replaced by irrelevant sex, then having the sex removed, rendering the result utterly pointless… Go to Full Review

Rafi แก้ว M 2d Jodorowsky, Pasolini, Fellini, Fassbinder, Ken Russell and Stanley Kubrick all blended together with an occasional spritz of graphic sex - I think this movie is under-rated simply because it's a little too kinky in places. Excessive sets, a la the Taylor-Burton Cleopatra, cameos by some really great actors, lots of gossamer, a hint of a plot, and endless clouds of incense make this a delightful screensaver, and an essential item in any true collector's treasure chest. The remake is basically a vanilla version, with no significant additions, and a few missing 'wow' moments that really reduce the quality. Malcolm McDowell is such a madman. This film not only stamp marks an era of Italian erotica but delivers a unique and effective interpretation of Caligula's bizarre, twisted and deeply flawed rule. See more Ahmed E May 3 A shameful, disgusting, and disgraceful picture, the filmmakers have overtly earned the contempt of so many by the exaggeration of the hardcore scenes in the film.
