Senior physician Dr. Gillespie (Lionel Barrymore) sends his student, the overconfident intern James Kildare (Lew Ayres), to work in the dispensary with nurse Mary Lamont (Laraine Day). There, a man unwilling to go to emergency pleads with Kildare to examine his friend, who has been shot. Kildare treats and hides the wounded man, whom he learns is a murder suspect. Smitten by the victim's attractive sister, Rosalie (Lana Turner), Kildare offers to help prove her brother's innocence.
