Joey H. Released on August 26th, 1994; directed by Jonathan Prince, written by Eliot Wald and Andrew Kurtzman, and a musical score composed by David Lawrence; this Disney film released through their Hollywood Pictures banner is about four schoolmates and friends who, along with several other friends and schoolmates, set out to have the best summer of their lives. The four main children are named Morris “Mud” Himmel, played by Jonathan Jackson; Zachary “Zack” Dell played by Andrew Keegan; Gaby Nowicki played by Melody Kay, and Trish Prescott played by Marnette Patterson. Each of these friends are facing going to separate summer camps that they’d rather not go to; computer camp for Mud, military camp for Zack, fat camp for Gaby, and theater camp for Trish. Based on an otherwise innocent comment by Mud, the four friends get the idea to use their parents’ money to rent out their own place and run their own version of a summer camp; one with no rules, no counselors, no parents and nothing but freedom to have fun. They end up recruiting an ex drama teacher and out of work actor named Dennis Van Welker, played hilariously by Christopher Lloyd, who is looking to pay off money he owes for a 1979 Caribbean yellow Gremlin car to a debt collector. After having to blackmail him into helping them, the four kids, along with maybe 20 or 30 other classmates who find out their plan, manage to rent out an old campground that used to be a hippie commune in the 1960s. As an extra added precaution, the kids and Dennis all convince their parents that none of their camps have any Parents Day so as to make sure they don’t try to come and visit there. As the kids are having the time of their lives, they soon arouse suspicion of a local doctor named Celeste Dunbar, and a state trooper named Eliot Hendricks. Eventually the parents all want to come and visit so the kids are forced to work together and give all of them a parents day for each respective camp. Do they succeed and manage to finish out their summer? Well that would be a spoiler wouldn’t it? This film also features notable actors like Wendy Makkena as Dr. Celeste Dunbar, Thomas F. Wilson from the Back to the Future films as trooper Eliot Hendricks, Burgess Meredith as Feln, M. Emmet Walsh as T. R. Polk; musician Nathan Cavaleri as Steve, Allison Mack as Heather, Joshua G. Mayweather as Walter Welton, Hillary Tuck as Betty Stoller, Mooky Arizona as Arnold, and this film also marks the feature film debut of Jessica Alba as a girl named Gail. This movie is a guilty pleasure for anyone who has ever been to a summer camp and has wanted to have the freedom to enjoy themselves. I give this underrated film a solid ten rating out of ten. It’s one of my all time favorites. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review Arildo R Comédia adolescente estilo anos 80: peripécias e aventura, mas com toda a essência da juventude anos 90. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Tanya B My childhood favorite movie. Watched it so many times, so entertaining. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/23 Full Review MayanLeonty A great movie. Wholesome fun. Great for all ages. With so many movies on streaming platforms which we all start and never care to finish this is a truly binge worthy movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/23 Full Review Omar F A great underappreciated gem. It's a great lesson for kids who don't want to listen to their parents. Also Christopher Lloyd, Tom Wilson, Wendy Makkena and Peter Scolari were fantastic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/18/23 Full Review Em H This movie came on Disney Channel all the time as a kid. It's super funny. Christopher Lloyd's quirks are perfect for this role. Ironically the richest actor in this bunch is a nonspeaking character named Gail played by Jessica Alba.
