The joke turns out to be as much against Canada as the United States, since Moore, perpetrator of Michael Moore's TV Nation, sees as much absurdity there as everywhere else. The result is only sporadically funny. Go to Full Review

The writer-director Michael Moore has hit on a sharp idea for a skit... The satire is too toothless to draw blood, though, while the mildly starry cast are surprisingly obtrusive. Go to Full Review

It is painful to watch the documentary maverick of Roger and Me make such a botch of his actors in Canadian Bacon. Go to Full Review

The premise behind Canadian Bacon is so absurd that it could very well have come from the mind of Mel Brooks. Go to Full Review

It takes a promising idea and mostly surrounds it with dull characters and insipid scenarios. Go to Full Review

Matthew D @OceanSage Dec 2 Outrageously funny satire with political foresight. Michael Moore’s satirical comedy Canadian Bacon (1995) is a crowning achievement of prophetic political commentary. Moore’s brilliant script and fast direction leads to his absolute best career best picture. Canadian Bacon has been one of my favorite comedies since I was a kid and it holds up. Moore directs Canadian Bacon like a classic spoof as he flies from Canada to America to send up both countries with a good natured sense of humor. John Candy is wonderful pretending to be an ignorant American fool, when he was really a thoughtful, sweet Canadian comedian. His lovable personality and sincere performance are a blast to see in his final film role as Sheriff Bud B. Boomer. Alan Alda is hilarious as the witless U.S. President as he has to be told everything. Overall, Canadian Bacon has held up as a ridiculously entertaining comedy and a nice farewell to John Candy as a comedy legend. Thanks for all the laughs. See more Matt H. @SurrealHayes Nov 9 This movie is a classic. It’s not the best written movie or the best acting, but it is one of the good old movies that still make me laugh! See more Nancy H Oct 25 I loved this movie! I get why Americans may not like it but it’s definitely hilarious for Canadians and it’s more true to life now more than ever in 2025! John Candy’s last movie and more Canadian humour than ever. See more Dave C Oct 19 "After generating solid laughs during its first hour, Canadian Bacon falls apart in its third act" - AV Club (2009). I must have been watching another movie! It's more goofy than politically-satirical, and is delivered on a pretty flat monotone from start-to-finish. It plays on the age-old rivalry and stereotyping of Canadians, and I'm sure it probably lands laughs across the pond... it just failed to for me, here in Old Blighty. 30 years on, I can't really comment whether or not it stands the test of time, but it certainly shows how tired a lot of the jokes have become in that time (more of a societal observation than one weighted against the writers and director of CB) See more Melissa L Sep 30 Funny, and frankly, timely, during the Trump administration. See more Dwayne D Sep 4 A must watch in 2025, this film is more relevant then ever. See more Read all reviews
