Anton Bitel Sight & Sound The film's complexity emerges less from the gory slayings than from a more moral brand of confrontation. Nov 25, 2019 Full Review EJ Moreno Flickering Myth Candy Corn is un-even and feels more like a miss than a hit, but I can't deny there's something that endeared me through the viewing. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 5, 2020 Full Review Jeffrey Lyles Lyles' Movie Files Candy Corn is stale and not nearly sweet enough for genre fans. Rated: 3/10 Oct 25, 2019 Full Review Jack Ford Battle Royale With Cheese In the end, Candy Corn is not a bad film - it's well made and everyone involved give it their all, but that's all trapped by a stale script and an inability to provide any real scary moments. Sep 18, 2019 Full Review Molly Henery The Blogging Banshee Candy Corn is a love letter to Halloween and classic slashers of the 70's and 80's that is sure to be a holiday favorite for horror fans. Rated: 8.5/10 Sep 13, 2019 Full Review Lorry Kikta Film Threat It's a wonderful celebration of '80s genre cinema that writer/director/editor Josh Hasty put quite a bit of work into to retain the authenticity of its place in time. Horror C Really enjoyed Candy Corn simply because its a good vibeing Halloween movie. perfect movie to watch when October rolls around. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/09/23 Full Review Christian C I just can't do movies like this. We're talking about a low-budget horror film called ‘Candy Corn' that does muted, piano-scored, "emotionally weighty" conversations that are so heavily dramatized, I could barely tell if it was supposed to be parody. If it just played it straight but recognized its genre, I might not have keyed in on it so much. But it's so self-serious that I couldn't ignore how tired I was. It's like staring at a home video from 30 years ago trying to solve a series of murders that didn't actually happen. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/11/23 Full Review Michael R Candy Corn is essentially Writer/Director Josh Hasty's 1 hour 25 minute homage to John Carpenter's Halloween. Did I say homage... Love letter from a stalker fanboy would be more apt. Set in 1980 and located in Grove Hill, OH (a small out of the way town in nowhere special USA) CC really has a late 70's early 80's feel to it. The cars, clothes, looping dialog, having 20/30 somethings playing teenagers; even the scenes shot and the film type used help do good job of pulling you into the story. Even the score and font used in the opening credit's was very similar to those used in JC's Halloween. The Sound Effects are spot on and are brutally cringe worthy. Matching the SFX in quality would be the campyness and gore factors which are off the wall + and don't disappoint. The cheese factor walks a fine line between omelet and souffle which kinda hampers more than it helps. What I really got a kick out of was the casting. Pancho Moler gave a good performance as Dr Death. But I was more partial to and excited to see Courtney Gains (Children of The Corn - Malachai, The Burbs - Hans Klopek); and Tony Todd (Candy Man franchise, Final Destination Franchise, The Rock, The Crow). Only the keen eye'd Cinefile would have noticed the ultimate link to JC's Halloween. The police secretary was played Pamela Jayne Soles an American actress who made her film debut in 1976 in Brian De Palma's Carrie as Norma Watson before portraying Lynda van der Klok in John Carpenter's Halloween. Candy Corn has so much promise but inevitably falls short of delivering any kind of blockbuster tricks or treats to its audience. It does however feel like you're watching a Legitimate Horror film made in 1979/80; not one actually made in 2019. While it may not be the best Horror film out there, and ironically --just like its candy namesake, it doesn't exactly suck either. There is a naive innocence that resonates throughout the film that keeps the story moving along, legitimizing the story and holds it all together. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/13/22 Full Review robb w Not the most original idea, but it was done well. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review adam b Well that was just a terrible horror film. The story leads to your usual horror trope of everyone slowing getting exacted revenge on, but each kill is fairly boring, each character it presumed dead in the future already so I didn't care about anyone, and the end was... well watch the film to find out yourself. I don't know how you could bland this film up with that awesome authentic Halloween aesthetic. I seriously enjoy a lot of so called terrible horror films, but didn't enjoy this.
