Candy Land follows Remy (Olivia Luccardi, It Follows), a seemingly naïve and devout young woman, who finds herself cast out from her religious cult. With no place to turn, she immerses herself into the underground world of truck stop sex workers a.k.a. "lot lizards," courtesy of her hosts, Sadie (Sam Quartin, Body Brokers), Riley (Eden Brolin, "Yellowstone"), Liv (Virginia Rand) and Levi (Owen Campbell, X). Under the watchful eye of their matriarch, Nora (Guinevere Turner, American Psycho), and enigmatic local lawman, Sheriff Rex (William Baldwin, The Squid and the Whale), Remy navigates between her strained belief system and the lot lizard code to find her true calling in life.

It’s possible Swab made this film just to tell a story about the more compassionate side of prostitution. If so, the movie’s guilty-pleasure thrills are just a bonus.

Watching Candy Land is a lot like eating beef jerky from a truck stop. In both cases, you might find yourself thinking, “if someone told me this was made in 1973, I’d believe them.” Yet both experiences can end up being enjoyable.

Much like the lot lizards themselves, Swab uses pink credits, classic needle drops, and Christmas cheer to belie something far more brutal and grim. It results in a flawed but compelling entry in backroads Americana horror.

Surprisingly thoughtful movie, given its grindhouse "feel," about religious extremism and sexual hypocrisy. Not sexy, not erotic, not what you expect from a "horror" movie, either. Very good performances and direction, will stay with you after the credits roll.

This movie is so much better than your typical low budget movie. The story was absorbing with its depiction of religious fundamentalism and cults, poverty, and prostitution and the "lot lizard" subculture. Although William Baldwin is the only known actor, the acting was generally top notch and believable. The direction was accomplished and the camera work was creative. Be warned as there are some very intense scenes in this movie. Could be a future cult classic.
