Variety Staff Variety Laughton is capital as the ruthless brigand of the seas, ruling his equally villainous rogues with stern cruelty. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Charles Laughton renders a grandly theatrical performance as the infamous pirate, a role he would spoof in a 1952 comedy. Blu B I've seen plenty of pirate films from this time period that are amazing and timeless. This isn't one of them. The acting isn't that good and one of the biggest problems. Besides Laugton, no one is that memorable, stands out, and give stock wooden performances. A lot of that is that old style of acting and it just feels so dated. Even Carradine is just alright hoenstly. Laughton I don't believe for a second is a pirate and feels miscast. Now everyone is clearly trying in this but it just doesn't work and a few others also feel miscast too. Not once do I believe any of them are pirates or could be and that's one of the biggest problems. The music is alright. It's that same orchestra Steiner type of sound you hear in most golden era flicks. But it doesn't really fit for a rousing adventure. It's more for a romance or melodrama. Sometimes it works though with some tracks that feel like it but majority of the time it doesn't work. The cineamtography is ok. Basic direction, most of the time it's just them standing around talking, and there is like BARE minimum pirate stuff in this. Firing a cannon, treasure hunting, sword fights, it's all right at the start and very end. 90% of the time it's just talking and melodrama. It never really feels immersive and the special effects are...alright I guess. The editing isn't good and neither is the pacing. While they go on the voyage it feels like stuff just happens. Pointless mutiny plotting, a romance with one of the crew and the passenger, Carradine & Laughton's tension for leaving him, a sabateur, and other things just feel like filler. Than at the end it feels like oh yeah were a pirate film lets do the pirate stuff quickly. Granted none of it is hard to follow but just very poorly paced, poorly acted, and none of it is immersive but none of it is broken either. Skip this. Plenty of better Pirate flicks than this from this time. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/25 Full Review SICKS6SIX S not Lawtons greatest film, but his best is the best there is, so he sets the bar very high, it's worthy of a solid 80% on my film review-ometer, good support acting and well written scripts, the sets are a bit flimsy to say the least, well worth watching and if like me you are a Chaarles Lawton fan its a must see film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Russ Not one of Sir Charles's better efforts. I think by this stage of his career the booze was getting to him, though he would later redeem himself in "Witness for the Prosecution." Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/01/24 Full Review Steve D Even its star can't make it interesting. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/01/24 Full Review nick s I quite like Laughton in other movies, but I think he was miscast in this one. And he didn't put in a strong performance. The movie as a whole didn't have as much bluster as I would have expected. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Hands down the most clever pirate films of all time. It is a tale of intrigue more than an action film and it is amazing for what it is. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
