There are some endearing qualities to Captain Nova. It’s not a bad movie outright. But it’s disappointing, with a lack of drive or message in the end. Its first acts are filled with glimmers of hope and intrigue, they just sputter out by the end. Go to Full Review

You have to suspend disbelief to enjoy this Dutch sci-fi mystery, but young viewers who do that could enjoy it and also pick up some healthy environmental messages. Go to Full Review

Nigel R 06/06/2023 The basic premise of Captain Nova is that a fighter pilot from 2050 goes back in time to 2025 to prevent a global environmental catastrophe; however, because of the time travel, she gets younger; hence, no one takes her seriously. In many ways, Captain Nova is like a lighter version of the German series, 'Dark.' What would happen if we tried to use travel as a way of averting disaster? I thought Captain Nova was better than the mediocre reviews I've read. It's by no means perfect, a little rough around the edges, perhaps, but it's a light but tight moral about environmental degradation, and it has a bit of heart -- and with the current dearth of SF movies with that quality -- they seem rather more bent on imploding our past interpretation of the genre at present -- it's refreshing to see something that has some human warmth, and a bit of harmless fun while doing so. Good performances all round, and the FX are good enough to tell the story of a fighter pilot going back in time to try to avert disaster. As a thoughtful, likeable SF movie for young adults, we can allow Captain Nova a few flaws -- it at least tries to be warm and uplifting, and at the time of writing, that's a novelty in itself. Delivered in multiple languages with its native being Dutch, the audio, the dialogue delivered, didnt seem to match with facial expressions nor seemed to be tied too closely to lip movements. This was not a negative in and of itself, the plot seemed interesting enough that I stuck it out through that (tho it helped that I was watching it for background) The idea of a adult traveling back in time to stop a man made natural disaster occuring isn't a new one, but for me, the combination of effects here seemed to make it interesting enough. Would I watch it again? 3 in 10 chance. See more 04/08/2022 Awful script, poor if not terrible costumes and the acting was pretty bad as well. Switched off after losing 35 minutes of my life. See more 04/04/2022 Good low budget film from Netflix and worth a look. Pretty predictable in a Greta Thunberg v BP sort of way. See more 04/04/2022 Neat story, but pretty silly overall. Also bad lessons for kids: steal cars, lie to the police, trespass, and in the end you won't get in trouble. See more Read all reviews
