Paul Attanasio Washington Post "The Care Bears Movie" isn't a bedtime story at all -- it's more of a lulla-buy-buy-buy. Jan 3, 2018 Full Review Time Out Adults forced to accompany three-year-olds to the movie would have had a little moment of satisfaction when the time came to shovel the Care Bear toys out of the house into landfill sites. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review Richard Grenier New York Times This endearing movie's mottoes are: never stop caring. And: the best way to make friends is to be a friend yourself. Rated: 3/5 May 21, 2003 Full Review Paul Lê Bloody Disgusting The Care Bears Movie makes for a surprising source of gateway horror. Rated: 5/5 Mar 28, 2025 Full Review Tony Mastroianni Akron Beacon Journal The movie preaches the positive power of friendship. And if it succeeds at the box office, it will prove the positive power of commercial tie-ins. Rated: 2/4 Aug 16, 2021 Full Review TV Guide The story unfolds simply, with respect for its young viewers and their view of the world. Audience Member A cute, relatively harmless movie even 40 years later Based on the popular characters with symbols on their chests spawning tons of merchandise from greeting cards to plushies to even a tv show and many direct to video installments The story is very easy to understand; the Care Bears descend unto Earth from Care A Lot to help some children who need caring in their lives Two of them are Kim and Jason while a third named Nicholas needs the most help He’s a magician’s assistant who’s not very good at stuff and is in desperate need of love and friends He then comes across a sinister magical book called the Spirit who offers to help Nicholas become a good magician But the book has other plans to turn everyone in the world into jerks and make everyone not care anymore So it’s up to Kim, Jason, and the other Care Bears to save Nicholas It is essentially a long glorified commercial but there’s not anything bad in it for kids The villain is the coolest and scariest portion of this although she doesn’t have any clear motivation for what she does but she does play on Nicholas’ temptation of power and influence The franchise itself served as an overcompensation for everything bad in the 1980s to carry the burden of the worlds troubles, it’s all about rescuing and consoling children It fed into the moral terror of this particular decade (where many kids fims featured darker, scary material challenging them) Yes, it’s stupid but keep in mind that it is intended strictly for little children It’s all good when it comes to the songs, the morals and and the message In fact much of the pressing themes of love and caring still holds up to this day we just have to be reminded I think the adults can find few things to like here and there but the toddlers will have a blast Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/29/25 Full Review Liam D This movie feels very much like the Care Bears themselves; Innocent, Harmless and extremely dull with barely script and characters, bland voice acting and terrible songs Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Cyrus K I am not gonna lie, i think this movie is close to decent (but it isn't decent). So what does the movie do well? i like the villain, the animation is decent with pleasant colors, and almost every character is bearable (no pun intended). But what doesn't work about the movie? The care bears themselves can be a bit overbearing (pun intended), there is a very strong feeling of slight overly sappiness (but not a troll in central park sappy!), and the songs really do suck! so overall, the good and the bad just clash to make a meh movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/13/22 Full Review Audience Member The greatest 01 hour: and 16 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Great song and feel good movie a must see especially for younger audience and adults alike. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member The Care Bears Movie is every bit as saccharine and harmless as you'd expect from this merchandise-driven piece of '80s animation (take that, Transformers! The friggin' Care Bears beat you to the punch as the first big-screen movie based on a toyline) but its surprisingly dark tone compared to the sequels and actually quite threatening villain could surprise older audiences. And for what it's worth, this movie DID save Nelvana from filing for bankruptcy following the massive undeserved flop that was Rock and Rule. This isn't a good movie by any means but it was never meant to appeal to anybody older than 6 in the first place so why should I treat it like an abomination? Especially given the well-intentiomed circumstances behind why it was made. P.S. I don't know what's more embarassing: The Black Cauldron getting its ass handed to it by this film of all things or the fact that this movie has a more detailed Wikipedia page than 3/4 of DreamWorks Animation's entire filmography.
