Audience Member It is sad to watch the pain of other people... but at least in this documentary, it wasn't all pain. I saw this documentary under the name "When Borat Came to Town", not under the name listed in RT database, but I know that it's the same film directed by Mercedes Stalenhoef which goes back to Glod, a drab, dreary village which name means "mud" where Borat movie began. Not a single one of its 1000 villagers loves this place. No prospects and little money, most of them are usually drunk, depressed or drunk and depressed. Glod is stuck in the Dark Ages and that could be the reason that comedian Sacha Baron Cohen chose it as a location for his hit movie, Borat. But the townspeople were allegedly told they were taking part in a documentary. Much later, when they saw that Cohen had portrayed them as rapists, hookers and abortionists, they were shocked. And they got paid whole $4 to sign a form for Rupert Murdoch's 20 Century Fox to make millions and millions of dollars. Most girls in the village marry at 15 but not Ionela. She learned Spanish by watching soaps on her grainy old television and wants to go to Spain to start a life much different from the life in the village without a running water. Ionela is suspicious of the lawyers who turn up with promises of lawsuits and 30 million-dollar payouts. These conniving charlatans are dangerous; it pains Ionela to see her father, grandfather and the mayor of the village sucked in. A wonderful piece of work, beautifully shot and edited. We could all learn something from it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member not in-depth enough to properly compel, but a great counterpoint to the making of a great satire. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved "Borat" but someone should have to give these poor Gypsies more than 3 Euro for looking like idiots on film. Roma Rights!
