In 19th-century Seville, Don Jose (Jean Marais) is a loyal soldier. That is, until he meets and is seduced by the mysterious gypsy woman Carmen (Viviane Romance), who convinces him to abandon his post and run away with her. Suddenly engaged in a criminal life, Don Jose joins up with a group of bandits led by Garcia (Lucien Coëdel). Dangers arise as the manipulative Carmen plays the two men against each other, stoking a fire of jealousy inside Don Jose that has violent consequences.
