      Critics Consensus

Deviations from the source material arguably cost Carmilla some of its bite, but it remains a well-acted period romance.

David W Although you would think this would be a faithful adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu's novella, the movie strips the story of most gothic and vampire elements. Ultimately, it muddles the overall theme, making it a questionable study of prejudice and intolerance. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Winnie G A sweet slow burn. Felt like it would be best watched at night with inscents burning. Its immersive period setting and displays of a quiet life draw the viewer in. I would recommend viewing this film to any lesbian vampire fans. Admittedly, the film does have a soft climax (which might be the only climax to fit the film) and its vampire imagery is minimal. Overall still well worth a watch even if the film is not perfect. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review kevin c After a carriage accident, a young woman survivor with no memory stays at the estate near where it happened where she takes a liking to another young woman living there. Decent atmospheric mystery of a film. Slow burn which benefits this movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It read the book a while ago, I think the movie was made nicely according to that. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review kerr s Boring, pointless, disappointing. Beautiful music though. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The way th is movie is riding the genre tropes and it is visual allusions to Coppola's Bram Stalker's dracula and True Blood and the generic period drama to get us to the conclusion is really really good. It is well played and well filmed. An engrossing movie Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Flirts with vampiric blood lust but is most satisfying when it delves into the superstition and repression that squeeze the breath out of life for young women... Rated: 4/5 Oct 19, 2020 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) A vampire story in spirit only, this clever and deliberately low-key adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu's garish gothic novella is a study in moral ambiguity and 19th-century religious hypocrisy. Rated: 3/5 Oct 16, 2020 Full Review Beth Webb Empire Magazine Admirers of Le Fanu's source material may enjoy this traditional interpretation of gothic seduction, but those craving more bite for their buck will be left hankering for something more modern and salacious. Rated: 2/5 Oct 15, 2020 Full Review Ren Scateni Vague Visages Carmilla proves to be a successful adaptation that will appeal to anyone looking for some unearthly shivers, or a coming-of-age story where being conscious of one’s own sexuality takes centre stage. Sep 21, 2023 Full Review Emma Clark-Dow Stuff.co.nz If you’re looking for something spooky, yet romantic, Carmilla will certainly pique your interest. Sep 26, 2022 Full Review Hagan Osborne FILMINK (Australia) ...effectively composed... unsettling production design and an appreciation for atmosphere that does not indulge in horror-movie parlour tricks.
