V.A. Musetto New York Post Rated: 3/4 Nov 9, 2003 Full Review Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Ultimately, the film is as numbingly boring as, well, a lengthy train ride during which there's nothing to do but look out the window. Aug 21, 2003 Full Review Stephen Holden New York Times When focusing on its four main subjects, Catching Out is an absorbing, picturesque group portrait. Rated: 3/5 Aug 21, 2003 Full Review Prairie Miller WBAI Radio Vicariously relays the intoxicating fusion of railway rhythms, the poetic thoughts of these nomadic philosophers, and the continuous enchanting flow of majestic landscapes that the most elaborate hi-tech special effects would find difficult to match. Oct 22, 2007 Full Review TV Guide Rated: 3/5 Aug 28, 2003 Full Review Maria Garcia Film Journal International In letting her subjects speak for themselves, George does a good job of exploring the lure of the road, or in this case the rails. Audience Member This documentary of train hoppers who ride the rails across this country are bad ass.. I totally think that the hobos and tramps are amazing people.. if i had the balls to walk away from technology, i would want to do it for a summer.. but yeah.. the missing of the balls.. its their own small culture and i think this documentary Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought the concept sounded great when I picked it up, but I found the interviews to be borderline embarrassing and awkward. I didn't find myself caring or even interested with the subjects. If anything, I felt sorry for them. The on-train filming was decent, but by the middle of the film, I was ready for something new. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I've watched this film twice: the first time because it was recommended to me, and the second because i wished to revisit the carefree quest for freedom that the film promotes. I do not feel that it suggests that people go trainhopping or break any laws. I do feel however, that it does a fine job of reminding those of us that live with the self-appointed boundaries of "normal" life that seeking freedom and self-expression should be a daily activity rather than a rare and infrequent one. I found the characters to be diverse and extremely eloquent, and their musings to be insightful humorous and inspirational. So if you're looking for a film that condemns alternative lifestyles and unconventional thinking, then this is not the film for you. However, if you wish to be witness to something truly liberating, consider watching Catching Out. Highly recommended. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews
