The woman who will become Catherine the Great (Elisabeth Bergner) marries into the Russian royal family when she weds Grand Duke Peter (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.), the nephew of Empress Elizabeth (Flora Robson). Although the couple has moments of contentment, Peter's cruel and erratic behavior causes a rift between him and Catherine. Mere months after Peter succeeds his aunt as the ruler of Russia, a revolt is brewing, and Catherine is poised to ascend to the throne as the country's new empress.

It is polished; it is artificial; and it is theatrical in treatment. But if you are tolerantly disposed towards romantic costume pictures, the insignificance of all this pomp and petulance will not arise to disturb your entertainment.

Miss Bergner, small and appealing, with the face of an eager child and bright, dark eyes, is superb as Catherine. She has one of the most beautiful voices yet heard in the films; even when she speaks in whispers, her words are distinct and moving.

I know painfully little of Russian history and this film did little to rectify that. Great performances. More ribaldry from the Kordas and London Films. Recommended lightly.
