He's got a great girl (Zoë Kravitz), tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is making an underdog run at the pennant. When his punk-rock neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) asks him to take care of his cat for a few days, Hank suddenly finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters. They all want a piece of him; the problem is he has no idea why. As Hank attempts to evade their ever-tightening grip, he's got to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out....

The film is brutal—filled with bad luck, questionable choices and broken bodies—but it’s also thrilling, propelled by Butler’s performance and Aronofsky’s compassion for the flawed. Go to Full Review

A picture with such a high body count is unlikely to be boring, but this is a lazily derivative throwback that appropriates ideas and plot points from numerous other movies (think Guy Ritchie’s After Hours). Caught Stealing indeed. Go to Full Review

The violence is screwball yet shockingly brutal, and Hank, in Butler’s charismatic performance, is a sweet-natured loser who feels real pain. Go to Full Review

Some story choices are frustrating, but Austin Butler’s performance and Aronofsky’s vivid depiction of the city make it a compelling ride. Go to Full Review

Caught Stealing and its mediocrity would be better received by other directors, but Darren Aronofsky has always been shooting so far beyond the stars compared to his peers that "it's fine" is somehow worse than the film being horrible or outstanding. Go to Full Review
