      What to know

      Critics Consensus

It's a bloody geyser of Neil Marshall's typically stylish B-movie action, but Centurion is too focused on hacking and slashing to deliver original dialogue or interesting characters. Read critic reviews

      Movie Info

In ancient Scotland, the Ninth Legion liberates a Roman officer named Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender) from his Pict captors. The soldiers are in pursuit of the Pict leader, and Quintus joins their quest. Soon afterward, the Romans' Pict guide betrays them, resulting in the slaughter of all but a handful of men. The Roman survivors try desperately to reach safety, as the indigenous warriors pick them off one by one.

A historical fiction rendition of the battles between the Romans and Picts in the North of Britain, Centurion features authentic sets and costumes, excellent acting, interesting characters, and brutally violent battle scenes (his horror bonafides clearly come through here). It's clear why he got the nod to direct a bunch of Games of Thrones episodes. Michael Fassbender is excellent as always, and he's rounded out by a solid cast including Dominick West, Liam Cunningham, Imogen Poots and Riz Ahmed. Olga Kurylenko as the mute Pict Etain is a standout -- striking in her war paint and deadly as a GoT Sand Snake. Marshall transitioned to TV after Centurion bombed at the box office, although whether that is why I don't know. But he contributed to some high quality series beyond GoT, including Hannibal, Westworld,, and Black Sails. I suppose I should give his Hellboy a re-watch (of which I do not have fond memories), and his latest The Reckoning (of which the star is his fiance and has an awful lot of controversy surrounding her).

Soldiers, trapped behind enemy lines and trying to escape, are chased by their relentless, merciless and savage foes. Only for this film, the soldiers are Roman soldiers, and the foe are the legendary Picts, brutal forebears to quaint English civility by some centuries. So it's a hazardous chase over mountainous and treacherous terrain while trying to survive killers looking for vengeance. Not a bad actioner.

Not a film Michael Fassbender will be remembered for but I suppose this film had its moments not many mind you, It's very bloody battle scenes are the only thing to take away from this film but even they feel cheap at times but a few gory kills help things along, The story didn't excite me and ended up being the least interesting part of the film, It got predictable and it's sometimes boring, It should of ended 10 minutes earlier but at least Michael Fassbender tries to make this a better film but even he can't help this film feel dragged out and very forgettable.

Based on the legend of the Ninth Legion, Centurion is an action-packed historical thriller. After a devastating attack by the Picts a Roman governor sends the Ninth Legion into the northern territory of Britain to destroy the Pict tribe; but the campaign goes badly, leaving only a handful of survivors to struggle to avoid capture and make it back to the Roman lines. Starring Michael Fassbender, Olga Kurylenko, Imogen Poots, and Dominic West, the film has a solid cast. And it's beautifully shot, with sweeping landscapes and authentic looking costumes and sets. However, the violence is a little too gratuitous in its gore, and it takes a while for the story to get going. Overall, Centurion is a fairly run-of-the-mill action film and doesn't really have much ambition.
