Wendy Ide Screen International Visually spectacular and energetic in style, this is a bracingly anarchic piece of storytelling that announces a distinctive new voice in Japanese anime. Jun 16, 2025 Full Review Andrew Mack ScreenAnarchy A joyous story of love, loss and comedic adventure, ChaO explodes on the screen with controlled chaos. It is a stellar debut from Yasuhiro Aoki. Jul 29, 2025 Full Review Ricardo Gallegos La Estatuilla On a storytelling level, ChaO has ideas that should have stayed in the past, but, on a visual level, it has ideas that look to the future. Ascheriit K This movie feels like the anime studio was given a huge amount of artistic freedom, so they created an amazing looking and beautifully animated movie, which had maybe a bit too much freedom. I recommend watching this to everyone who likes anime, is artistically inclined, or who just wants a solid rom-com to watch with your wife/gf. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Going into a bit of detail in terms of criticism: It seems like this movie took 9 years to create, which indicates production issues, a lack of vision and leadership. The story was pretty weak, the order that the story was told didn't make much sense. Having a 15 minute flashback during the conclusion of the movie doesn't feel good and takes away from the pacing that is so important for a good finish to the story. In Japan the movie got almost no marketing at all, and it seems like it is struggling with views, which I feel is extremely sad and unfortunate for something that has so much charm to it. The world is fantastical, characters can sometimes movie in unnatural ways and gravity feels more like a suggestion rather than a rule. It feels like the animators were having fun in terms of the character movements, which is great in terms of creating a fun atmosphere, but at the same time i think it took away from the realism of the situations that the characters found themselves in. Many things seem to work out in a way that feels too convenient and artificial, and as an avid Anime fan I've found that it used storylines that have already been used in other animes. Interestingly, the main character of the story was one of the least likable characters in the movie. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ But to finish on a positive note, all the criticism said doesn't matter due to the following reasons: - The movie starts off at a fast pace so it pulls you in quickly with its comedy and charm. - The art looks breathtaking at moments, the character design might be an acquired taste, but it honestly flows extremely well and the animation overall is 9.9/10. - While its characters aren't unique, their design is extremely imaginative, expressive and funny at times. Lots of visual comedy is also added, so it will get a few laughs out of you at the very least. - The story is its weakest point, but due to the good pace that it has for over half the movie (the ending is its weak part) - it is a solid story that it's telling. There's loss, there's love, there's laughs and some might also spill a few tears (depending on the person). ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Conclusion: It is definitely a good watch and I don't think I wasted my money going to watch it. It is definitely worth the admission fee and time, especially if you go with your wife/gf. It could've been a lot better, but it is heavily carried with its art and overall charm. For me it was better than the last Ghibli movie. It was a 8/10 for me. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/21/25 Full Review Read all reviews
