      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Chappie boasts more of the big ideas and visual panache that director Neill Blomkamp has become known for -- and, sadly, more of the narrative shortcomings.

Cvltmxnd B What a world we live in where people who wouldn't even know where to start to create a movie like Chappie have the privilege of criticizing it. Ninja and Yolandi were amazing and I'm sure this was a big hit in South Africa. Any movie that makes you have emotions for an inanimate object has done a great job in my book. Remember Wilson from Cast Away? This movie came out in 2015 and the special effects were top notch. This will always be one of my favorites and also gives us a look into the not so distant future. The American voice is fading and thank god for that. If the US was banned from social media for a year the world would be a better place. Most definitely. If you haven't watched this movie please do so. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review Connor A This is a good film. Chappie is the star of this film and is what makes it good, (thanks in part to his design and Sharlto Copley's performance) he is cute and funny and is the only character you get invested in. The other characters aren't as good and come off as annoying or one-dimensional. The first half of the film is slow and kind of drags but the second half does pick up with some good action and emotional scenes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review chase t Not sure why this isn't regarded as a cult classic. One of the best sci fi films I've ever watched. I think maybe the casting of Die Antwoord maybe? Not sure. Wish we got the sequels Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Retro T goofy but good. The bad guy (aka the one controlling the MOOSE) felt very generic and felt like every other typical bad guy. The movie felt very goofy and kinda funny. Chappie felt like a great character, definitely great design. Still holds up to this day. If you want a different take on a movie with AI Robots and all that jazz, Chappie is a great option. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Chad B This movie is an interesting mish mash of different types of characters being thrown together with spectacular action scenes. It has a lot of emotion behind it. I know a lot of people don't like this, but it has become one of my favorite sci fi flicks. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review James V Forget the critics' disdain, this film is a masterpiece that asks many questions about transhumanism, A.I. and what it is to be sentient. One of my very favourite films Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Angie Han Slashfilm The larger story is positively riddled with plot holes, and any sense of subtlety seems to have fallen right through them. Jun 14, 2017 Full Review Katie Kilkenny The Atlantic It's this time-old message of humanity, adapted to fit with today's technologies, that transcends the overpowering, at times clunky, cinematic vessel. Jul 19, 2016 Full Review Jake Coyle Associated Press Its oddly jumbled machinery never clicks. The logic of Chappie gradually disintegrates, becoming increasingly farcical. Dec 14, 2015 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Blomkamp’s film contains a concept ripe with possibility, but instead of realizing its full potential, he loses himself in machines and mayhem. Rated: 2/4 Jul 12, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The concept of creating AI that must learn through observation is one with vast potential, yet it feels considerably restricted within the walls of a derivative action movie. Rated: 3/10 Dec 4, 2020 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) On a storytelling level, Chappie mixes a sweetness and a swagger that becomes quite addictive.
