Critics Consensus

Closer to the source material than 1971's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is for people who like their Chocolate visually appealing and dark.

Ryan Gilbey Sight & Sound If anything cramps Depp, and the film's sense of fun, it is the weight that is placed on reconciliation between Wonka and his father. Sep 28, 2006 Full Review Ken Tucker New York Magazine/Vulture As the star who's framed in the center of nearly every shot he's in, Depp is a constantly surprising Willy Wonka. May 12, 2006 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Finally a worthy, excellent remake. Jan 17, 2006 Full Review Jana Monji Age of the Geek While Wilder's Wonka had the pensive perfume of bittersweet chocolate, Depp's Wonka is that weird white chocolate--not really what you have in mind when you want to eat chocolate but can be an acquired taste and definitely part of the culinary craft. Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast Credit Burton for going the practical route; it visually grounds the otherwise fantastical film. Surprisingly Depp's unhinged and frequently bizarre performance works more often than not. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 12, 2023 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand ... for all of the flights of fantasy, Burton never quite finds the heartbeat that warmed the original classic with Gene Wilder, partly because this Willy Wonka is so disconnected and distracted, unable to relate to anyone... Liam J This was the movie that introduced me to know about the willy wonka movies and it a great movie Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review molly k I dislike that movie hurt. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Marlon W excellent, at times there are some bad special effects, I think they spoil the experience a bit, but the story is very captivating, Tim Button did a great job in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Audience Member The music and the whole vibe is really fun. I can see how people think he Willy Wonka is annoying though. He is made to be an awkward man-child on purpose. OG Willy Wonka has more aura. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Markus L Just watched it and... oh god... what can I say, this movie is TRULY horrible. The visual effects look... bad. But I guess they're FINE for a 2005 movie. And the story is also FIN- well I mean actually it's pretty TERRIBLE. Why the fuck is Willy Wonka such a psychopath in this movie? He literally just let’s children get into dangerous situations! For example, one kid falls into the chocolate river.. and WILLY WONKA JUST STANDS THERE… WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING! And why in the actual FUCK, do the Oompa fucking Loompas have to sing EVERY SINGLE TIME someone is in a major danger and almost dying?! Like tf?!?! Instead of HELPING them, they just tell the parents to fuck off and get their child themselves. AND WILLY WONKA DOESN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, HE JUST FUCKING SINGS ALONG! It's just horrible and VERY uncomfortable to watch. The emotional moments DON'T WORK and the acting is BAD. Also, for some reason I want to PUNCH the Oompa Loompas in THE FUCKING FACE (and also the actor who plays him... I just hate him). And for some stupid reason, Wonka has these weird moments, where he has flashbacks, and says some random crap. Again VERY uncomfortable to watch. Basicaly the whole movie is just that: bad acting and child torture. The WORST part is in the end (this is a little spoiler): the children don't even go back to normal! For example one kid who became tiny, and got stretched out later... JUST STAYED FUCKING STRETCHED OUT?!?! LIKE ATLEAST FUCKING MAKE THEM NORMAL AGAIN. The movie's ending also fucking sucks! The ONLY thing I like, are the parts with Charlie's family... but that's pretty much it. The WORST movie I have EVER SEEN. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Audience Member I really wanted to like it but very weird and unlike the originally very unmemorable.
