Critics Consensus

Closer to the source material than 1971's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is for people who like their Chocolate visually appealing and dark.

Ryan Gilbey Sight & Sound If anything cramps Depp, and the film's sense of fun, it is the weight that is placed on reconciliation between Wonka and his father. Sep 28, 2006 Full Review Ken Tucker New York Magazine/Vulture As the star who's framed in the center of nearly every shot he's in, Depp is a constantly surprising Willy Wonka. May 12, 2006 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Finally a worthy, excellent remake. Jan 17, 2006 Full Review Jana Monji Age of the Geek While Wilder's Wonka had the pensive perfume of bittersweet chocolate, Depp's Wonka is that weird white chocolate--not really what you have in mind when you want to eat chocolate but can be an acquired taste and definitely part of the culinary craft. Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast Credit Burton for going the practical route; it visually grounds the otherwise fantastical film. Surprisingly Depp's unhinged and frequently bizarre performance works more often than not. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 12, 2023 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand ... for all of the flights of fantasy, Burton never quite finds the heartbeat that warmed the original classic with Gene Wilder, partly because this Willy Wonka is so disconnected and distracted, unable to relate to anyone... Danna R I find it really fun because you get to see many things, like the kids’ personalities, how chocolate is made, and how someone with so much power can help a person with fewer resources. And by helping that person, they’re also helping an entire family have a better quality of life Danna reina 1001 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/23/25 Full Review Francesco P Il peggior film sulla fabbrica di cioccolato Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie is pretty good for all ages, and very interesting. The most thing i love of this movie is definitely the core that this film emanates, i like the dream core of the factory, that generate a feeling of uncertainty, and that feeling that give the liminal spaces, definitely an amazing movie to watch! - Luis Diaz Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Grant B. I grew up watching this and it brings back memories. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/12/25 Full Review Kid R. Definition of dog poo Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/26/25 Full Review Blu B On a story telling level it's not broken or anything like that. It makes perfect sense. Editing isn't bad, but in terms of adding or expanding on the 1971 classic this not only fails at that but just a complete misunderstnading of what made that work so much better...miles and miles better thats mind boggling. I get the nostalgia if you seen this as a kid but once you remove that factor my goodness this isn't even close. The CGI is terrible. The practical effects here are done in a dark twisted manner that sometimes works and other times just isn't as good as the original. It reminds sometimes of the Cat in the Hat which isn't a good thing. Deep as Wonka is so weird, unlikeable, creepy, and unnatural. Charlie and his Grandfather here feel almost like an afterthought after they enter the factory. The worst part about this is the music numbers and the soundtrack in general. It's just...wow. I mean seriously funk, 00's pop sounding numbers in a movie set long before those were even invented. It's like if Barry Lyndon used T.I. or Usher in it's soundtrack. It doesn't fit at all and honestly it feels almost borderline disrespectful to the original movie. That part more than anything rubbed me the wrong way, intentional or not. Everything else isn't that good here. The humor in this also is so cringe and weird at times. There are just straight lines that don't make sense. This focuses much more on Wonka's backstory which is a cool ieda but feels so out of place in the flashbacks. This should've been done in almost it feels like it's own seperate movie (A prequel). The small amount that that does add isn't worth the huge chunks it takes away from. Gone is all the magic, wonder, fun, and sincerity of the original and replaced with darkness, unintentional creep factor, cringe jokes, and something that feels so soulless. It has that soul less 00's look to it at times also. Skip This. This is the definition of pointless remake. Even Burton's Planet of the Apes didn't have as large a misunderstanding of the original as this does. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Read all reviews
