Audience Member These gamers are nuts. It really is crazy how huge these people got in such a small pond. The rise and fall of the arcade was roughly a three year period back in the 80s and these guys still live in that world with their achievements. Its just crazy. Film really shows you this little world. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Endearing and depressing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic documentary and perhaps the best glimpse one can get of the retro video game world of the 1980's. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting documentary. You don't invest in the characters as much as "King of Kong" but still worth a viewing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting film, about those who were at one time, and probably still are the best at playing video games. This film is not as good as "The King of Kong", however they both came out the same year, so that is a neat fact. However, "King of Kong" kind of gives the viewer a good vs. evil, and a hero to cheer for. This film just tells the story of these people were once featured in Life magazine for being the best video game players, and were they are now in life, and what it was like. How the industry has changed, so it is a different film. If you like "King of Kong", and what some more knowledge or see other people in the industry. Then I highly recommend this film, otherwise don't bother, and see "King of Kong" first. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie will provoke inevitable comparisons to The King of Kong, since they both involve many of the same classic video game enthusiasts. Whereas King of Kong presents itself as a character-driven sports movie, complete with hero and one of the biggest villains in documentary film history (okay, that might be a slight exaggeration). Chasing Ghosts definitely presents its characters in a more honest light, allowing them to portray themselves however they wish. The picture presented may be more honest, but is in no way more optimistic. It is surprising how negatively some of the individuals portray themselves, and how sad some of their stories are. Justin Chang Variety Visually arresting look at the dynamics of competition and camaraderie that animated a fascinating geek subculture will entertain just about anyone who's ever tried their hand at Pac-Man, while paying affectionate tribute to a bygone era. Feb 6, 2007 Full Review Luke Y. Thompson New Times ...some who see this film will laugh at its protagonists, others with them. A little of both feels about right Jun 30, 2007 Full Review Erik Childress eFilmCritic.com Mixing a wealth of reports devoting news time to the craze, a worthy 80s soundtrack and some fun computer rendering of the game's rules, Chasing Ghosts is a true bit of cinematic time travel. Rated: 3/4 Feb 7, 2007 Full Review Alex Billington FirstShowing.net Chasing Ghosts is chock full of plenty of realistic 80's nostalgia that will give any child-of-the-80's a hard on for arcade gaming all over again.
