Clarence Tsui The Hollywood Reporter A pale reboot of the mobster-biopic genre Wong helped make a cornerstone of Hong Kong cinema in the 1990s. Sep 29, 2017 Full Review Jamie Healy Radio Times A sketchy, time-skipping script, some lame dialogue and too many thinly drawn characters take off some of the shine, but this is still an enjoyably polished production. Rated: 3/5 May 9, 2024 Full Review James Mudge easternKicks.com Donnie Yen and Andy Lau are the draw, and are worth the price of admission, though it's hard not to feel let down by the refusal to paint the protagonists in shades of grey Rated: 3/5 Oct 24, 2020 Full Review Harris Dang easternKicks.com Chasing the Dragon is a bombastic failure as a throwback to 90's gangster films, as a Donnie Yen acting showcase and worse, as a Wong Jing exploitation film. The only thing the film ends up chasing down is its own tail. Rated: 2/5 Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Scott Clark Starburst The problem is that you've seen it all before. By the end, Chasing the Dragon feels like a stylish retread of Jing Wong's early hits, full of great performances from dependable talent, but missing the scuzzy edge that made his early films so strong. Rated: 6/10 Feb 14, 2018 Full Review Joanne Soh The New Paper (Singapore) Yen gives a fine performance of a man willing to do whatever it takes to survive. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 4, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews

Liam D A different kind of Gangster movie with strong performances by Donnie Yen (The Lost Bladesman, Special ID) and Andy Lau (Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame, Shaolin) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/15/22 Full Review Audience Member I can't say that I enjoyed this movie very much, but I was very much absorbed by it. It's not like any other Donnie Yen movie I can recall seeing, and it's ESPECIALLY nothing like anything previously done by Wong Jing, whom usually makes (well made) low-brow silly or sleezy movies. This is completely humorless and quite brutal, and doesn't even really have much fun with itself -- it doesn't seem to be made to entertain, but rather to make you feel an intense emotion, and on this level the movie works great. This is perhaps its greatest weakness however - Sometimes movies can fuse an ultra-serious movie with entertainment without compromising the story being told (good example would be 'Black Hawk Down'), while this movie feels more just in the nihilistic and sour grouping alongside things like 'The Shinjuku Incident', having the raw intensity of the ultra-serious events be the sole focus. Personally I did like it more than 'The Shinjuku Incident' and I will probably revisit it from time to time, but it likely won't be in my BluRay player very often. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review chris n The pace is so frenetic at first it's hard to figure out who's who and juggle lightning fast subtitles at the same time, but after a bit it becomes a respectable and visually apt gangster flick. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Seems a remake of the old movie. Andy Lau is getting very familiar to act the 0.5B Detective. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review gareth d Good fun, pretty intense but honestly a lot longer than it needed to be, dragged on in places and tried to be a little too artistic, lots of shots of people staring over balconies wistfully smoking etc. Still enjoyable, worth a watch especially if you enjoyed the 90s HK gangster movies.
