Audience Member Before a Review, isn't it amazing how much Zoë Tapper, "Evelyn," resembles the ascendant Claire Foy ("The Queen")? They easily could play sisters. She seems a fine actress, too, a budget model with the same visage. This ensemble of mildly eccentric characters puts on a show that isn't as bad as the critics say, but the story still never quite gels, its own premise torpedoed in the library scene near the end - how she long ago stopped loving him & he never would've married her. Yet this is a story about what-might-have-been told in screen tinted golden flashback recollections of what's presented as an abiding & destined first love. Here's an uber attractive cast doing a good job in a story going mostly nowhere. But this is a girly-girly chick-flick and is mercifully cut to 90-mins, or so. All the elements for a passionate story are here but an engaging arousal never really rises. Oh ... and why doesn't someone grab that obnoxious kid by the belt who's lighting firecrackers all over the house and creating an annoyance ... even in the movie? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Humorous with biting drama. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Thoroughly funny whilst boasting an emotional and tense script that will leave the viewer wanting more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member An artistic film, which was beautifully acted and full of humour. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member The story had potential that the film never fulfilled. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Poor Luke Ward-Wilkinson was completely wasted in this movie; he deserves so much better. Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The movie builds with a tragic eloquence that's haunting while at the same time delivering a justifiably tear-filled coda that had me smiling in hopeful exuberance. Rated: 3/4 May 11, 2017 Full Review Anna Smith Time Out The film builds up to something that never comes. Rated: 2/5 Jan 8, 2013 Full Review Mark Olsen Los Angeles Times Rice does a fine job of juggling so many characters and moving smoothly among flashbacks without losing sight of the main story. Rated: 3/5 Dec 14, 2012 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com It's as politely dull as the generically benign phrase of its title. Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Cory Everett The Playlist The film may help Downton Abbey fanatics looking to kill a little time in that era but holds little cinematic appeal for the rest of us. Rated: C- Jul 10, 2013 Full Review David 'Mad Dog' Bradley Rip It Up ..this costume drama set in the lull between World Wars is drawn from Julia Strachey's 1932 novella (apparently much-loved by Virginia Woolf) and proves to be almost impossibly English.
