Critics Consensus

Chevalier uses a simple fishing trip as the backdrop for a slow-building, queasily compelling look at the modern male dynamic.

Joe Clay Times (UK) Chevalier runs slightly out of steam, a victim of high concept over narrative ingenuity, but it is a relentless satire on male vanity and the grim hollowness of machismo. Jul 18, 2022 Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses Like a black comedy feminist Deliverance, Athina Rachel Tsangari finds lying within the cracks of masculine performativity an inherent struggle with the omnipresent 'threat' of the feminine. Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Adam Nayman Cinema Scope Anybody who doubts that the film's trivial pursuits belie a cutting, Buuelian subtext should watch the final exterior shots carefully. Sep 28, 2017 Full Review Justine Smith Vague Visages Chevalier further indulges in the dank impulses and fragility of the male ego. Nov 21, 2023 Full Review Aaron Pinkston Battleship Pretension Chevalier is incredibly funny and light on its feet. Though a deeper sociological experiment in embedded within the game structure, it is simply entertaining to watch these characters take the competition so seriously. Jan 6, 2021 Full Review Ard Vijn ScreenAnarchy It is very well-acted, and often chuckle-worthy, and it does pose an amusingly distant view at how we all constantly compete with one another anyway, whether we're using a rulebook or not. isla s This is very much a film about male competitiveness and to a lesser extent, masculinity. I wouldn't say its entirely about toxic masulinity as such but the characters featured are pretty petty, it's safe to say. Another term that comes to mind is one-up-man-ship. Plot pace wise, its pretty slow and I thought it was quite bland. It certainly didn't keep me glued to the screen. There are some cliches present and the characters didn't interest me. I watched it, I wasn't completely bored from the start but also it certainly didn't grab me nor is it at all memorable really, in fact it felt a bit self indulgent if anything. Unsurprisingly, I wouldn't actively recommend this, no. There was something that sort of worked about it, although I'm not entirely sure what precisely - the surroundings perhaps but not much else. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite tiring and repetitive. While I get the point, I don't see anything outstanding or fresh in particular. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A great study male ego and inherent tendency to competition. Thought-provoking and funny at the same time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member A newer addition to the "Greek weid wave" as I like to refer it to. Athina Rachel Tsangari is the director and she is known from "Attenberg" and as the producer of more known films like "Before Midnight" and "Dogtooth" - two of them other movies from the same genre or classification. We're on a luxury yacht. There are six or seven buddies here, all male, most of them in their fourties or fifties. They fish, they eat, the drink, they sleep, but most importantly they compete. They compete in being best. Being best in general there is. It's known as "the game of the chevalier" or something and each of the contestants are taking notes and grading each other efforts. They also dicide what they should compete in and there are some pretty cool challenges - other are much weirder. Plusses and minuses are given, bonds are made and driven apart. There is much fooling around but the competative minds are always there - just like real life when it comes to men, really. The rivalry truly hits the spot! A funny and very original film with a plot I really admire. At times it's a bit flat, but it got solid moments too. Very likable characters and very steady acting. It's lovely shot too. Maybe a bit long, or maybe duller sequences should be funnier or more interesting, but in total a very fresh film. 7 out of 10 bottle shaped eggplants. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Singular estudio sobre la conducta masculina, lo curioso que està dirigido por una mujer. Lo mejor del 2016. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Childish overcompetitive men. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
