Carlos Aguilar RogerEbert.com [García Bernal] has evolved his craft substantially, even if the progress fails to yield a fully formed and tonally cohesive outcome. Rated: 2/4 Sep 11, 2020 Full Review Jessica Kiang Variety The insurmountable flaws baked in to Augusto Mendoza's screenplay leave a sour taste after the adrenaline subsides. Oct 24, 2019 Full Review David Rooney The Hollywood Reporter An exhausting misfire. May 23, 2019 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia I get nothing but fatigue watching 'Chicuarotes', the second film as director of Gael García Bernal. It's insufferable. Audience Member The most crude and realistic representation of Mexico I've seen in a while. It makes you uncomfortable? It's tone is all over the place? That's what it is trying to do, that is the real Mexican reality for a lot of people. This movie makes you feel, it makes you be at a place you wouldn't normally be, sometimes it feels more like a documentary rather than a film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/25 Full Review Sergio A It’s a shame that Gael García Bernal, after working with some of the most renowned directors in cinema, ends up repeating the dramatic flaws of his weakest projects. Technically, it also falls far short of the standards one would expect from someone who has collaborated with some of the world’s best cinematographers. The result is a mess of poor acting, a directionless and pretentious script, and truly subpar cinematography. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/09/25 Full Review Audience Member La recomiendo es mejor que esa porqueria de emilia perezzzzzz y la critica esperimentada vayanse directitos a la chingad@ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Read all reviews
