      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

There's a gripping story at the heart of Child 44 and a solid performance from Tom Hardy in the lead, but it all still adds up to a would-be thriller that lacks sufficient thrills.

Sara A The best on Amazon Video. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review Shawn D Not sure why this film received bad reviews. I was engrossed. Superb performances. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/23 Full Review Dan V This film's plot was so good, I watched it twice the same weekend. It was different, it was full of twists and turns and it had a great cast. Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace were absolutely great in this film. You think the film is going in one direction and then it surprises you with a change in direction that you don't expect. I highly recommend, especially if you like those two actors. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/26/23 Full Review Kate f Aside from the villification of the former Soviet Union (although to be fair the story is set in the Stalin era), Tom Hardy was excellent. Definitely a cut above what one often finds on Amazon Prime. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/05/23 Full Review Noel K I can't think of a mainstream movie that better depicts the terror of Stalinist Russia! The fact that Berardinelli states in his review that "Today's Russian government has disputed the authenticity of Child 44's depiction of the Soviet Union in the early 1950s..." points to the disconnect that exists between those that comment versus those that document. Seriously James? I rewatched this movie after many years and find it to be a timeless representation of the horrors of suppression of free thought and expression of a nation subjected to the paranoia of one individual. History has shown Stalin to have been second to none...including his contemporary Hitler...when it came to the subjugation of the masses in the pursuit of ill conceived personal hubris. Tom Rob Smith's source book was a compelling read and I found this adaptation to be just as depressing and terrifying and sad...and compelling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/10/23 Full Review David L terrific production values, totally bought the setting. some great set pieces. a dumb, convoluted story, an unbelievable hero Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Alissa Wilkinson Christianity Today In the end, the film lacks an imagination, and that unfortunately winds up dragging it through the mud. Rated: 2/4 Apr 23, 2015 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews The movie hints at a riveting story but is incapable of delivering it. Rated: 2/4 Apr 19, 2015 Full Review Jonathan Romney Observer (UK) Hardy is very odd, as usual. Rated: 1/5 Apr 19, 2015 Full Review Jordan Brooks Vague Visages A Kafka-esque condemnation of Stalin’s government ham-handedly plopped into a John le Carré spy thriller, Child 44 is ambiguous cinematic fluff. Aug 3, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies A unique and compelling procedural that I found satisfying even in its messiness. Rated: 4/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review With its pointedly non-Slavic cast, Child 44 features an impressive roster of actors delivering muddled Russian accents, leaving us to wonder what Espinosa has against today's native Russian talents?
