Critics Consensus

An animated adventure perhaps best appreciated as a visual experience, Children of the Sea is strikingly lovely if less than satisfying on a narrative level.

Maya Phillips New York Times "Children of the Sea" finds plenty of beauty and purpose in the watery depths but doesn't provide enough grounding first: It's all too easy to get lost 20,000 leagues under the sea. Sep 2, 2020 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com The universe may in fact be held together by dueling perspectives, but the only thing consistent about Children of the Sea is its inconstancy. Rated: 2.75/5 Sep 21, 2020 Full Review Lee Jutton Film Inquiry For the stunning animation alone, Children of the Sea is worth watching, but don't be surprised if you find yourself drowning in the film's strange, surreal story. Azra S I am so glad I wasn't convinced by the rating as this was one of the best animes I've seen in my life. It whimsically dives into deep questions about existence, nature-human connection with a heartwarming story. Every scene is artfully drawn with amazing details, textures and palettes. Almost all the comments with low ratings mentioned one thing: the narrative and its lack of linearity and closure. Yes, it very beautifully and intentionally lacks these. It is fragmented, it is twisted, it is confusing at times. I don't know how else you can talk about the complex topics it bravely and tenderly undertakes. Yes, you will have to fill in the blanks with your own brain and imagination. That's what great art invites you to do. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/28/24 Full Review mah nemah j This has to be the only piece of media in my life I genuinely regret watching. Aside from visuals it has nothing to offer: several plot lines that literally go nowhere, most vague philosophy-wannabe dialogues, the message suffers from an extreme case of circle jerking and essentially boils down to "a human is THE universe, not the other way around. also hey, HUMAN REPRODUCTION". Also, romantic undertones between the main heroine and two boys and that kiss scene were cringe af. It felt so out of character (for the boy) and out of place, like it was there for the sake of it. What really topped it off is the grandma at the end going "when I was your age I also had a boy like that teehee". I watched it with a friend and we were both laughing our asses off at how ridiculous this film was at times. It's comes off so pretentious it becomes a comedy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Juno D "Children of The Sea" attracted me by its beautiful and magical looking world and animation, and although that aspect doesn't exactly fail, the movie's plot and worldbuilding creates more questions than answers, leaving for a very smudged premise. Its worth the watch at least once, but all of it is carried by its visuals and characters. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Caroline The movie takes its time and moves forward very quietly, but the build-up is beautiful visually. There are a lot of gaps you have to fill in by asking your own questions, and I found that a little rough at the end because the overall picture it paints is very vague. I'm starting to realize that perhaps I have to see things from the eyes of the main character to sum anything up, because it's more a movie for emotional processing than it is a logical puzzle. Afterall, we barely know 90% of the story, and it was made that way on purpose. When I think about the movie it seems to bring back another one of the animations into my mind, and I really like that, and I like the feelings it brings with it. It creates a world much larger than we are. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/22 Full Review Yashashree D This anime, is so beautiful, the animation, the art- style, the story, the quotes all were like a magic, even the music. I am still shocked how underrated it is and rating this low. For me it's another best I have seen and truly a masterpiece. I hope more get acknowledged of this and understand the beauty of this anime <3 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/22 Full Review Late R Pure magic, ‘Children of the Sea' is a feast for the eyes with an ambitious story that deals with life, death, and rebirth on a grand scale. I can't praise the big visuals and absolutely stunning animation from Studio 4°C enough, they're dazzling and unique, popping off the screen with vibrant colours and some crazy sequences. As for the story, it takes a bit of time to get going, but when it does, it reaches for the stars and delivers something full of wonder, mystery, and quite possibly a lot of confusion. The overall experience is artsy and saturated with a strangeness that often feels like something dreamt up by someone on one hell of an acid trip – yeah, this won't be for everyone. But if you don't need your films to make perfect sense or to answer all the questions; if you're in it for the experience alone, then I can guarantee you've never seen a coming-of-age tale quite like this one.
