Audience Member An experimental art piece, full of various disconnected long shots of people existing in China. Some of them are at work, some of them are walking from place to place, some of them are staring into the camera, almost at the viewer. This isn't a movie for everyone, in fact I actually have a hard time recommending it to anyone, since it requires a very open mind and a lot of patience. Personally I think It's best viewed in segments: watch it for a while until something comes up or you get bored, then pause and come back to it later. Treat it like an art piece in a museum. You don't have to stand and look at it for an hour and a half, you can meander around and come back to it as you see fit. G. Allen Johnson San Francisco Chronicle "Chinese Portrait" is a great art installation, but a thoroughly unsatisfying film. Rated: 1/4 Jan 30, 2020 Full Review Jonathan Romney Film Comment Magazine The first great film of this year, arguably, was Wang Xiaoshuai's three-hour So Long, My Son...although it is only 80 minutes long, his Chinese Portrait is equally expansive, although in a telegraphic, fragmented manner. Dec 20, 2019 Full Review Kevin Crust Los Angeles Times Brimming with humanity, Wang's contemplative, minimalist approach forces us to consider the day-to-day lives of these people, and perhaps our own. Dec 19, 2019 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row As the film progresses it becomes something at once wondrous and revelatory, a dynamic living document of modern China that invites viewers to take in the world around them. Rated: 3.5/4 Dec 17, 2019 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse Connecting the images is like putting together the pieces of puzzle that shows the whole of China, in its past, present and future forms, and that is where the production's value truly lies.
