In this animated retelling of Charles Dickens' classic tale, Ebeneezer Scrooge (Simon Callow) remains the same old curmudgeonly hermit. As he tries to resist the Christmas cheer surrounding him, several ghosts appear to him to show him the error of his ways. The Ghost of Christmas Past (Jane Horrocks), the Ghost of Christmas Present (Michael Gambon), former partner Marley (Nicolas Cage) and an earnest mouse help him change his cold heart just in time for the holiday.

Genevieve Harrison Empire Magazine The narrative is so curiously lacking in audience appeal that kids may find the prospect of spending Christmas in the workhouse more attractive. Rated: 2/5 Dec 30, 2006 Full Review Neil Smith BBC.com A pity the film as a whole could not match Winslet's singing voice, the only ripe plum in an otherwise rum pudding. Rated: 2/5 Dec 17, 2001 Full Review Alan Jones Radio Times Charles Dickens's oft-filmed classic ghost story here suffers the final indignity of being turned into a sentimental and unimaginatively drawn cartoon. Rated: 1/5 Nov 19, 2019 Full Review PJ Nabarro Patrick Nabarro This strange hotch-potch of an animation falls between all stools: failing to honour the seasonal elements to this most famous of Christmas fables while not doing anything new Rated: 2/5 Nov 10, 2018 Full Review Tracy Moore Common Sense Media The animation is competent and reminiscent of late-'90s-era cartoons, and the voice work by Kate Winslet, Simon Callow, and Nicolas Cage up the movie's overall heft. Doc X Never knew how much dislike there was for this movie. I always enjoyed it especially the mice. It seems for a while in my childhood mice were a big theme in movies (mouse on the mayflower, fido goes west, etc) so maybe as an adult I could still remember that time and didn't mind the mice. The thing I always go back to (except for maybe the Flintstones Carol) this is the only Christmas carol Scrooge gets a second chance with Belle. That always struck me as nice. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review ewdaddy This low budget adaption of the christmas carol story is the one with the scariest visuals, and i thank it for that. i grew up watching it as a child and was always so scared, but loved the thrill. this movie is a part of what made me who i am today Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/25/23 Full Review Joel H I suppose if Christmas Carol: The Movie were the only film adaptation of Charles Dickens' story, perhaps people might actually like it. But it's not, and it's pretty pitiful compared to any of the other movies. First of all, the animation is atrocious. It looks as if it were made on a shoestring budget in a foreign country in the 70s. And despite the intriguing cast, which includes the likes of Kate Winslet, Nicolas Cage, and Michael Gambon, this movie prefers to focus on pseudo-comic relief mice. It's difficult to hate any adaptation of A Christmas Carol, but this one is definitely the bottom of the barrel. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/03/23 Full Review Stephen C LOL, funny and profane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Cyrus K The main problem with this movie is that it doesn't even know what it wants to be tonally. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/03/23 Full Review jacob b One of the worst adaptations of A Christmas Carol to date, this 2001 version has wooden voice acting, stilted animation, makes the odd decision to add two random non-anthropomorphic mice that add absolutely nothing to the plot and, most egregiously, brings NOTHING new to the table. It's a very "going-through-the-motions" take on the timeless tale with absolutely nothing that stands out to the point that the darkest part of any adaptation, when the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows up, the already short, even for 2001, movie rushes through the thing to wrap everything up ASAP. The only good things about this film are that Kate Winslet has a lovely singing voice and casting Nicolas Cage as Jacob Marley is the most hilariously baffling casting decision ever. Just those two things. If you like this film, that's fine but there are much better adaptations of the Charles Dickens literary classic out there, both of the straight and unconventional variety.
